Default Poison Ivy Removal

Does anyone have any experience with clearing out poison ivy plants?

Just past the woodline behind my house, there's a nice clearing that would be a great area for a trail course. But there's a lot of poison ivy back there. This area has been undisturbed for so long, it's nearly taken over. The trees have some of the biggest vines of the stuff that I've ever seen, and there's a lot of ground cover, too.

Any tips on how to clear this out, preferrably without dousing the whole area with herbicide? I've heard of cutting the main vines and treating the cut ends with a certian herbicide (instead of spraying it everywhere and killing everything else). But what about the ground cover? I'm not sure that pulling up the plants and turning over the soil would help at all, as there are roots/vines everywhere already.

Maybe I should just scout out a new spot :?

Keep some mineral spirits handy when you clear it. Wipe down any exposed skin with it when you are done. It cuts the oils from the plant that cause the rash and itching. It works pretty well. Good luck.

Jump in the middle of it,roll around and get it all rolled up in a ball around you. Then hop, jump or roll your way to where you want to dispose of it.

A landscaper once told me he uses a good oil/grease cutting dish soap for when he came into contact with it.

Lacquer thinner works great for getting poison ivy off. But i wouldn't know, I don't get it either. I have seen this stuff at I think TSC that kills only poison ivy, and nothing else, it isn't cheap but it works.

That stuff is hard to deal with. My suggestion is that you take some machinery in there and get it all out. The oils will stick to about everything, so anything that touches it will need cleaning. You could also use hand tools if it isn't much space.

Otherwise the old chop and herbicide is a good method.

Hmmm dont know of a decent way to get rid of it....

however ... I do know of what natural plant to look for when you get it on your body and you want to treat it !

I have had a friend rub his poison ivy hands down the back of my leg. Needless to say, I had a puss dripping, rough skinned area on the back of my leg for a while. It was around the size of my hand.

good part is .. the guy got it on his johnson...

EDIT: here is the link to the plant if you get it on you

If you get the oil on you, nice cool water will remove the oil in the first 20 minutes or so.

First spray concentrated round up, then spread a large tarp on it and put rocks on it to hold the tarp down. It kills by chemicals and by not letting it preform photosynthesis. But it will remain toxic after its dead too so have fun. I am not affected by ANY of the poisonous plants that lerk in the forest, so I would pull it.

I did some research, and it seems Round-Up and Ortho Brush-B-Gone, along with vigilant weeding are the best bet. I'm hoping that once I clear it all out, the thick leaf-litter that collects will help keep it at bay.

So thanks for the tips, and screw all 'yall who aren't affected by it
The stuff drives me mad.
