Default Jpeg compressor

Could anyone tell me where to locate a good free one? The advitar file size is really small for my high quality pictures. I've downloaded one but it was jp2 or something for a file type so it wouldn't save right.

Jpeg is a compressed format, sorry you can't compress it any more.

You can re-size and crop pictures with a good program like IrfanViewer which is free.

You could also try Gif files format, sometimes those files can be smaller.

Wink jpeg compression

Do you want to compress the image or just make it smaller?

If you just want to make it smaller, and if you're using a computer that's not an Apple (a windows platform i.e. windows 98, XP, Vista...) just:
  • Click on "Start"
  • highlight and select "All Programs" (assuming it's windows XP)
  • then highlight and select "Accessories"
  • then highlight and select the "Paint" program
  • once you open the image, highlight and select the "Image" tab at the top left corner of the program (near "File," Edit," "View...")
  • then highlight and select "Sketch/Skew" and change the percentage fields under the "Sketch" section of the window that pops up
  • If the image is still too big or to small after you enter values, just highlight and select "Edit" and click "Undo" to go back to the original size
  • Keep doing that till you get it the way you want it
  • SUGGESTION: first save the image under a different name so if you screw it up, you still have the original image (I learned that one the hard way)
  • GOOD TO KNOW: You can always make an image smaller and it looks great, but you CANNOT make an image larger and have it look great! It becomes very pixelated.
Hope that helps

I know how to resize, thats no big deal I'm not that new.

The main issue is I find a picture that I would like to use as a advitar. I resize it to 100 pixel width and the file size of that picture is 16kb a no go for the forums. I could bring down the size but by the time I get it to the correct file size the picture is so tiny 50-60 pixels.

I'm basicly looking for a way to reduce the file size nothing else. Maybe find a program to reduce the quality of my image and thus bring down the file size.

I've got image expert, adobe photo shop, and others I don't see a place that I can reduce quality.

Of course the easiest way is to reduce the quality on my camera when I think I will use the picture as a advitar. But, well that never happens.

So you're looking to reduce the quality which is really the only way to reduce the file size.

In photoshop when you save your image, after you select the folder there will be a little pop up window and in that widow you have a quality rating of 1-10 with a little scroll bar.

Click the image to open in full size.

I just resized it (to the same size you had) using powertoys and it came down to 7.51kb.Don't remember if green stars have to have smaller sizes than blue.Hope that helped.

Check in your pic editing software that came with your dig camera if you have one. Mine has a option for the pic quality when you save it.

I recomend www.irfanview.com for all your basic picture resizing and compressing needs.

I use photoshop CS2 my self, and the save for web option lets you scale the compression qaulity and see the finished result before saving.

I did and it has a compressor, it just won't compress enough. Still at a 10kb and the picture looks like garbage.

Just tried that irfanview and it is just as worthless as the others. I don't know if it's because a resized the pictures to 100 in a different program with out compresson and now it's can't be compressed more or what. I have 6 different photos every last one of them is to big for the forums.

I'm so sick of that crappy advitar pic that I have now. I've never liked it since the start. Every comp that went by I told myself I would find a new picture. Now that the comp season is over I'm out of luck. My truck doesn't even look like that now. This stuff is very very frustrating, I've downloaded 4 different programs and absolutly every last one of them has not helped one bit.

Ben, when you save in irfanview, you need to change the saving options to jpeg, then check the options box "Show options dialog" Then slide the slider bar to 50% quality and see how that looks, play with it from there.

I slide the bar to quality 1, the picture looks like a five black squares and the file size is 6.88kb.

I took some pictures with my camera on the lowest settings (VGA) and the pictures are still way to large in file size.
