Default Toyota motor help (22r/22re)

OKay my dad and I are rebuilding a 85 toyota 22r/22re, and he bought a head from a guy, that said it would work but its a 84 (little different).

We cant get the timing chain onto the cam, we're thinking the 84 head is a little taller, anyone know what the problem could be?

I had a 22R head on a 22RE engine when I bought the truck (used) figured out that if you bust off a full link and replace it with a half-link, it will work fine.

Deck height, piston tops, compression, exhaust manifold to head bolt pattern, compression is different. I'd find the right head. 81-83 22R same, 84-88 (and maybe later) are basically the same.

I did the same thing, except my block was an 85+ and I had my old head ported, polished, etc etc. I ended up swapping blocks since I already had the headwork done
