| Minimum Time Between Searches = 60 second for now
I have set the minimum time between searches from 15 seconds to 120 seconds for now as a test. It is peak hours right now and we all know the board slows down, I want to see what impact this has on the performance. I will probably set it to 60 seconds during tomorrow's peak time to see how that is. So in the mean time, until I get the second server installed would you rather have a faster load time or be able to search more frequently? Thanks, peewee Last edited by badger; 03-13-2008 at 04:57 PM. |

Now that I'm done searching, faster load times! Although I stopped searching from waiting 2 minutes between resultless searches. |

I'm late to the party, but here's my $.02. 15sec is too short. 60sec is a widely accepted interval, but 120sec isn't unreasonable. There's a balance to be struck, but in general, viewing a thread or a post is more important than searching. Looking at the stats, you'll find that thread and post views generally outweighs searches by a landslide. That being said, one way to help offload some of the search workload is to leverage our friend Google! You can integrate the Google search into the site should you wish -- to complement the forum's built-in search (NOT replace it). An example of using Google to search rccrawler.com would be to enter the following (less the quotes) into Google's search box: "site:rccrawler.com novak brushless" And here's a link in case you don't want to type that in. - Chris |

I'd have to say that the 2 minutes between searches is a bad idea. I know from experience (I mod other boards) that if people can't find what they are looking for with search fast and easy, they'll just muck up the servers with re-posts (I'm guilty of this on RCC!). But, on the flip side, it will be good to see what effect this has on overall performance. Let us know how the testing goes. |

I love long waits between one misspelled search with no results and another.

It's a killer for us "quick to hit the NEW POSTS button" guys, but understandable. 120 seconds last night sucked, tonight's 60 seconds is much better from a user's perspective. Whatever works better for the forum is cool with me, us members will adjust. |

Good news is that the new $1300 in memory came in so I can start building the second server to fix this performance issue the right way.

I have one thing I would like to add to this conversation. Can we get the search fixed to allow less than 3 letter word searches. Currently when you try to do a search containing a word that is less than 3 letters it basicaly says you have to enter 3 or more letters. Thats gay!!! I have searched several things one of witch I remember very well, I was searching for M8 radio posts, just to see if anyone has posted on them and the search function wouldnt let me do it. Personaly I think that is one of the most retarded things I have ran accross in the last year or so........but thats just me There have been several othe things but I just cant remember at the moment exactly what they were. So...........can we get this fixed????? Thanks Shawn |

If you want to do a 2 letter search using RCC's search engine you need to add a wild card. I.E. m8* radio or "m8* radio" to search for the use of m8 and radio as a phrase. Or you can do 2 letter searches using google by doing this search: site:rccrawler.com m8 radio or site:rccrawler.com "m8 radio" again to search for m8 and radio as a phrase. Done. Let me know how it works.

The one minute search sucks. Go back to 15 seconds MAX. Was always nice to be able to narrow down and search again after you browse the first page of random hits or type in "ti links" and get a too short error message. 9 out of 10 people would rather a noob use the search button than to keep reposting "which tires are the best" but now its actually quicker to post up a new thread. Not that the 15 seconds wait is going to put an end to useless threads but hey, atleast its nice for the folks who do use it. |
