Question about dates of membership

I want to become a star holder. And am going to get one very soon, it's just that when you pay for your membership, do memberships count from Jan 1st to Jan first the next year or do they go from the date you buy the star till the same date next year? Like 11-23-07 to 11-23-08? Either way I'm buy a membership.
