I respectfully disagree... about the beat up part. You don't go see Monster Jam and hope that Grave Digger comes out with a beat up body covered in primer. Even the hardcore 1:1 trucks I've seen look nice, without duct tape and rust all over them. Flash sells. Get them interested in the hobby first, show them the guts later. For the hardcore people, yea, we want to see how it works, but for the newby, get 'em hooked with the shiny aluminum and fresh chrome.
I've noticed the changes this "sport" has taken over the last two years or so, mostly with the TXT, as that's what interests me most. At first, it was all about running stuff like 2 Mag Mayhems, lightweight carbon chassis, aluminum lower supports, aluminum cant's, Maxx trannies, etc. Now it's cutting the stock frame, using lathe motors (there's a market yet to be capitalized on, only Integy makes them right now, AFAIK), cutting the lower supports off for clearance, gear reductions, etc.

Some people, and extreme photos of nice looking rigs.

I like both.

For a magazine you want a location that is...what's the word..."Cool", and the rigs to look good.

In real life I don't like beating on a nice body, especially after taking the time to paint it.

But I do like the "all business" look of an "ugly" crawler.

I wanted RCRockGuru's Toyota 'Cruiser TXT...just didn't want to spend the cash on it. OD green and khaki.

I agree, people love flash and good looks, but they also want to see carnage.
Why is monster Jam so popular? Because Dennis Anderson and Tom Meents are the most hardcore drivers in the world and are willing to destroy 2-3 trucks per event. Rockcrawling is growing so fast because the drivers are willing to put their rigs on their lids to make the obstacles. People love action, action sells, and action means carnage.

My philosophy is, "Make it werk good, make it look good, and then abuse it."

This is in no way a dig or criticism directed at any of you guys, just making conversation.

What is nice about rc crawling is that you can just slap a nice fancy body on for the concourse pictures....
all you guys that come out to my comps have seen how many bodies I have. I like the flash too but not during a comp. I make my comp bodies look good and I even spruce up the rest of the truck for the comps but if you look closely, the body is pretty beat and the undercarriage of the truck is toast!

My truck should perform great then! It took a beating today and looks like Crap!

We had a nice day of crawling today at Green River. Lots of fun.

Carnage-
Highmark twisted the end off of a TLT axle shaft
4XAdict stripped a tranny gear and broke a aluminum servo arm
I stripped a 645MG gear
