Default PARC Boulder Battle #2.........PICS from Arizona

Great day out on the rocks. Here are some pics from the day.

Here's some of the guys and the terrain.......

Shawn's TTR Clod. Short wheelbase and open diffs wouldn't let him get far. Hopefully he's back to try again.....

Steve down in Death Valley........

More death valley......

The start of the fourth stage was a killer face......

Only Kevin could make it up.........

The rest of use had to use the cheater rock......

Following the climb was an optional descent.......hold on......

Middle of the last stage had some tight boulders.......

Where's that rear tire going?.......

This narrow shelf on the last stage gave everyone fits......

Then it was another ledge climb.......

The home stretch coming to the bottom of the rock pile......

Some link damage......

Dave's broken outer axle......

Dave's broken shock......

Looks like a noodle now......

Great pics and Nice carnage!

What bent the hi-clearance links? A bad tumble?

Dave, I broke a stub axle like that. I wasn't doing anything cool, just over-tightened.

Very cool action shots. I can't get enough. So Dave, how do you like Old Blue again? Looks way more trick than when I drove it in Sac. How would you compare its ability to the old version?

Once again great pics. Where were the results by the way?

It blows the old one away BFTs are awesome, it had a ton of traction. I've got some bugs to work out still (That day was the first time I had that truck in the rocks) But it does really well. I can't wait to run it some more!! Some fluid in those shocks, work out some better shock mounts, get the front steering to go a bit tighter and its set. This rig is a lot of fun.

CSR: The high clearance links broke at almost nothing, IMO... They got mangled in one light fall, and just got worse and worse and worse. They are so soft that he was bending them back by hand! My stub shaft actually broke from being UNDER tightened.. I got a good fall in and it snapped right off. Fortunately it was loose enough it just turned out

It was a lot of fun. Hell, I didn't even get my rig done in time and I had fun just watchin'! As for the ledges, a lot of 'em looked pretty hard (and some of them proved to be extremely hard), but big? I think those were just the small chips that have rolled to the bottom of the mountain over the years! But I suppose that it wouldn't be very practical trying to climb near vertical ledges bigger than a bus...lol.

I'm not sure what I blame for doing so poorly, probably bad driving and too long or a wheelbase (plus some breakage) I had tons of fun though

First off , where are the pics of Roktoys rig on the course.
I imagine he drove while he was there ?
Congrats to Kevin, i may have to sponsor you mate ,you are doing Centipede engineering proud with all your great driving and comp results. And all with a truck thats a few years old.
Wait till he starts driving a Spyda
Well done.

Who are each of the ugly mugs in the pic at the top.
I presume Dave is in the long sleeve shirt due to his comment about heating up.but who is who.Kevin is holding the paper..????

Those links look to be made of very soft alloy , we make ours out of 6061 alloy and are 6mm thick, we have never had one bend.

Those links are made out of 6061 Alloy looks like I am going to have to make some heavyer duty High clearance links. I havent bent any from the hours of crawling on my rig. I guess I must drive a bit carefull.

black tshirt is Steve or slbk5
long sleeves is sr5dave
holding papers is me, kevinlongisland

no pics of jays (roktoy) truck because he took all the pics. unfortunately, i had my camera with me but didn't take one pic. too busy.

Gimbal.....despite the shallow tread, the Moabs stuck quite well. The compound is soft and sticky on the rock here. The one problem is that without foams they compress a bit too much. In tight holes they can compress and drop under an undercut or in a notch. Then they reinflate and trap the tire. May do good to run some half foams.

Bender....what's a shaftie? :P

Russell.....I didn't get any pics of my rig. I was running my old Rokclod5 again but did a quickie wheelbase stretch to 16" and had lathe motors. Worked much better with the longer wheelbase, but I forgot to put any weight in the front tires. Steep climbs were my biggest challenge. I pointed out on the nasty ledge climb at the end of Stage 4. Flip, flip, flip.......

Kevin's rig is setup well and he is an awesome driver. He pretty much kicked our butts all around ....we'll keep trying though.

Yes, Dave in long sleeve. Kevin with paper. Steve with truck. Two other guys were spectators.

The links Steve had were strong in a vertical plane but made of thin (~1/8" material) so they were weak horizontally. With the links providing all the suspension location they bent quite easily the first time he rolled it hard on its side.

Here are the results per stage:

Stage 1:
Kevinlongisland.....0
roktoy..................1
slbk5...................11
sr5dave...............12
shawn..................36

Stage 2:
Kevinlongisland.....12
roktoy...................1
slbk5.....................7
sr5dave.................1
shawn...................50

Stage 3:
Kevinlongisland........-17
roktoy.....................-15
slbk5.......................27
sr5dave...................55
shawn......................DNF

Stage 4:
Kevinlongisland......-42
roktoy....................44
slbk5......................47
sr5dave..................50
shawn....................DNF

TOTALS:

kevinlongisland,mach1, Xtreme...................-47
roktoy,custom tube chassis, rokclod5............31
slbks5,cx, "P" ............................................92
sr5dave,custom, Big Blue...........................118
Shawn, thunder tech..................................DNF

i thought the moabs worked well, but did suffer from the problems roktoy stated above. also, i didn't like the offset of the rims. with widers the truck was too narrow. is that called to much negative offset? does anyone make rims with more positive offset?

1050 miles ;) I drive 2.5 hours each way to get there. If you went 105 it would only take 10 hours

Russell, here's RokToy's rig. Not the best pic, but the only descent one I got. Sorry for the "almost larger than life" pic, I don't know how to resize them yet.
