2007 R/C X-Games

Attention MNRCRC competitors... the 2007 R/C X-Games are right around the corner. Once again they will be held over Labor Day weekend. We have been asked to return, and Mike Fisk would like to see bigger and better.

For those who are unfamiliar with the X-Games, it has been dubbed the 'Woodstock of R/C'... there is a bit of almost everything there. It's main attraction is the huge nitro races. Then there are the other events: Rock Crawling Competitions, The Mini-X electric off road track with rental Mini-Ts available, a R/C aerial show, R/C boat demo and a 1/5th scale demo race. There will be media coverage again. Skinny from Xtreme R/C Cars will be attending again, and he's working on getting Anna back again too."thumbsup" For more information click the title above to be directed to their site.

This year we have planned one of our official comps to be held at the X-Games. The reason for this thread is to plan out our event.

Of course we will need to design a course. This is flat land, so we will need to supply crawling material. Do we want to haul in rocks? Add some bridges again to fill gaps? Where will we get the supplies from? Is it feasible to make a course (i.e. foam sprayed onto chicken wire)? We can just make 1 course and have 1 stage in 1 direction, and the second stage reversed. B.T.W. Space is not an issue... Mike has said we can have all the space we need.

There was a segment in last year's Inside R/C coverage about us. Click Here

Speak up guys, Mike is counting on us to manage this event so he can focus on the main event.

Very close to Nats, Sept 1-3rd

I should also add, that we are also kicking around the idea of having a scale top truck challenge event for Sunday-Fun day.

Mnster 07-05-2007 11:30 PM

Ooow don't know if I can swing it then.:-(

Nats is set to be on sept 8th and 9th the week after this. Already twisting my bosses hand for a week off of work.

We'll see, maybe we will have enough cash saved up in time.

I just have to win the mashed potato event.

Is this going to be a mostly scale truck comp as you guys were talking about last year?

A crawling comp for our main event on Sat, and possibly a scale Top truck challenge type event Sun.

And I know how you feel, we pulled this off last year 3 days before Kevin and I left for the Nats.

Mnster 07-05-2007 11:37 PM

Man now that you drag the scale top truck thing in now I pretty much have to go.

It's just going to be a little rough driving 14 hours over 2 days then 3 days later driving 18 hours to moab.

Is there any rules on the potato masher trucks? Maybe I can borrow soya's beast truck for the weekend?

Might wanna check on the spud run rules with Mike Fisk on the X-Games site.

I'd vote for a portable course of some kind. I know of the burden you guys had last time with all the heavy rock. Something like the Chicago expo course would be nice.

Mnster 07-05-2007 11:55 PM

Something like this.

might wanna check out pricing for the Styrofoam 4'X8' sheets at lowes or Menards , and check NAPA for the roll on bedliner and buy a cheepie undercoating sprayer at Harbor (yea i've been thinkin about this)

who has a trailer big enough to haul it ?
i can volinteer time and labor

pink foam is $10 a sheet, for every inch of thickness, 3 inch foam is $30.

And like I have mentioned before, it should be done in 3x3 foot sections so everyone can help haul it, and we can actually store the stuff.

If we can get a handful of people to make 2 or 3 sections, and bring them, we would have a decent course. I wouldn't mind having 3 sections my self, for testing at home.

And if we stick to one size, everyone can make their sections how ever they want, just as long as the size is the same. And make sure all 4 sides have a few holes for zip ties, to hold the course together.

Etype R 07-06-2007 08:31 AM

Ohh and I am in for 2 or 3 sections my self. Here are my rough plans right now...

frame each section with half inch square steel tubing, welded together. Form the rocks with heavy chicken wire, maybe some 3/16" rod supporting it. Tac weld the chicken wire to the frame, and cover everything with fiberglass, or some other fabric and resin. Coat with beadliner and test the finished product :)

Maybe I will pick up some steel tubing this weekend and start on the frames... And get some chicken wire.

Just had another idea that I might try when I make them, fiberglass and coat both sides so they can be fliped over to mix it up even more.

If we are interested in a Tuff Truck competition, I had a few ideas:

-Mud run. We could use the spud run as a mud run. Whoever can make it the furthest or finish the fastest.

-Tank trap. We could easily dig one in the dirt. Maybe even add water.

-Mogul course. Just like the skiing event, but for trucks to drive through articulating the suspension to it's max.

-Log crossing. Crawl over fallen 'logs' in the mud.

-Hill climb. Whoever can make it the highest. We could even just use a big pile of dirt.

-River crossing. There's no running water out there, but we could build a little stream/river with a pump. If you've seen Troy's old 'rock garden' you'll know what I mean.

These are just ideas of course. We could build these with little materials.

speedsport22 07-06-2007 10:43 AM

Just remember the bedliner by it self is to slipery. Add some sand and you are golden. I cant buy any materials but I would love to help any way I can. Just let me know what I can do.

Silverdirt 07-06-2007 11:06 AM

myself and Sirmaxxalot are planning on coming down for this one. "thumbsup" :-P :!:

MaddJack 07-06-2007 05:48 PM

maddjack

I'll be there and "thumbsup" "thumbsup" the chicken wire sounds the most economical to me.

Nicklepimp 07-06-2007 10:54 PM

Troy and I were brainstorming ideas for courses for the Tuff Truck competition. We came up with a few more:

-Rock Run. basically a rock crawling course scaled down some.

-Tug of War. 'nuff said.

-Straddle course. like in Mnster's link above when they are ridding the 2 'V' shaped boards making sure not to drop a tire in the powder.

***How many people are interested in this Tuff Truck event? We should get a unformal count to see if it would even be worth the effort. This would be geared for scalers. Please post up if you'd be interested in entering a scaler for this event.***
