cliff climber gear pitch

does anybody know what pitch pinion the cliff climber uses is it a 32 pitch or is it metric or what. i ended up puting 2, 540 can, 50 turn integy lathe motors into it i had to use a 23 tooth pinion to get the mesh and i just used the 48 pitch that i had but that obviously wont work so now im in need of finding the correct pitch of the pinion and then getting 2 23 tooth pinions in that pitch. if anybody has information that would help me out it would deffinently be appreciated.

The pinion pitch is 0.6 module AKA metric 48. It is kind of an oddball.

How bout some pics of those 540s mounted on the axle? :P

maxxman_121 03-29-2009 02:09 PM

ok thanks spartacus

and here is some pics like you wanted ccbg

Pics look good. Where's a build thread???:)

We could all use more ideas.

Nice looking rig, like what you have done to it. You should post up a build thread or at least some detailed topless shots.:)

ccbg 03-30-2009 03:52 AM

Ye, pics look good, and that CC is nice ;) Looking forward to a Build thread as brokenb4 said :) or something like that...

InFlames 03-30-2009 12:36 PM

Bet that bitch dont get clod stall."thumbsup"

maxxman_121 03-30-2009 05:21 PM

thanks guys glad you like, and as far as a build thread goes i never took any pics of it along the way to getting it were it is now but i will get up some more detailed shots and body off shots so you can see more of it.
correct pitch pinions on order through the lhs so it should be up and running within the next wk or so and then maybe i can even get a vid. of it up

So Maxxmann, Get those 540's geared yet?
By using a 23T pinion, your lowered the ratio to about 14:1 from 29:1 with an 11T. I'm wondering how the 50turns will be.
Robinson racing has a whole range of 0.6M pinions, from 12t up to almost 30T I think.

Wonder if your setup would work, with some rewound 100 turn 540's, and a 23T pinion, at 6V. That way the wheel speed stays down.

BTW, did you simply bore new 3mm holes for the 540 mounts, or widen what was there?
Did you have to remove some of the axle case to tuck that 23T pinion in there?

maxxman_121 03-30-2009 06:28 PM

no hopefully by this wkend i will have the new gears. the only problem with putting a smaller pinion on is that there is no ajustability to get the motor closer to the axle to make it mesh up.

i just used what was there when you take the stock motor out there is two inserts that go in between the two sides of the axle housing to keep it from squeezing the two sides of the housing together you simply take those out and then use the lower motor mount hole for the lower on the 540 and then for the upper mount you actually go through what would be the upper screw for the gear cover as it is drilled all the way throught the housing already and then i just used a 4/40 by like inch or inch and a half for my top mounting screw cause thats what fits and thats all i had that was long enough.

as far as getting the 23 tooth pinion in there once you get those two inserts out it opens it all up and there is actuall quite a bit of room inside of it.

Are you trimming and reusing the screw tubes that span between the gearbox walls?
If not, you might want to run to Lowes or a hardware and get some Nylon spacers and trim to fit.
Without them, when you tighten the screws enough to hold the motors, it pulls the gearbox wall inward and rubs the Spur gear and possibly the pinion. Could also shift your pinion to spur alignment off.

What voltage are you planning on trying to start, keeping in mind you just cut the final ratio by more then half, so wheelspeed is going to be crazy fast.

maxxman_121 03-30-2009 08:06 PM

no theres no need for the tubes at all because the top gear cover mount that is now the top motor mount is solid all the way through and then the bottom motor mount i just put the screw through the one piece of the housing instead of both this way it pulls tight up against the can and doesnt squeeze the gearbox in.

for my voltage im running a 2 cell lipo per speed control so itll be 7.4 volts and as far as wheel speed goes im not worried about that cause of the little i did get to run it with the wrong pinion it still has good torque and with my other 3 crawlers experimenting with them i found that as long as you still have a good amount of torque and know how to control your wheel speed then it can actually really help you

Robinson Racing has 0.6 module gears. They might work with These motors.

maxxman_121 04-03-2009 06:36 PM

thanks sdheavymetal those are actually the gears i ordered and just picked up a little bit ago at my lhs

SDheavymetal 04-03-2009 08:32 PM

How is the speed of the CC with those motors? What mods did you do to make them fit? Matt

maxxman_121 04-04-2009 07:14 PM

well i got the gears and got them installed last night, today the wheather was nice so i was able to go down to one of the local spots and get some play time in and over all i have to say that i am very happy with the performance of it so far, except for part of the way through my run the front started skipping inside the axle ive got the steel idler but now i have to upgrade the counter gear and the spool gear in order to put the power to the ground reliably.
here is a couple pics on the rocks.

sd as far as the speed of the cc goes i would say its a very fast walking pace or slow jogging pace but it still has good torque also so its all around good to me. as far as mods go i didnt need to do any to put them in

What's the tooth count on the pinions?

maxxman_121 04-04-2009 09:55 PM

they are 23 tooth pinions

brokenb4 04-04-2009 11:45 PM

Looks good. Glad to hear it's breaking parts, I consider that a good thing.

All I need is video and I might be giving this a try. I wonder if the results would be even better with say a couple 65t?
