Default is gearbox seperation normal?

My cc keeps grinding gears in the rear but only in reverse, atfirst it only did it in a bind, then it got to where it did it every time i put it in reverse. i took the box appart and all the gears were clean and smooth, put it back together went back out and instant grinding. so instead of jumping the gun and buying steel gears when my plastic ones look fine i checked everything else first (gear mesh, binding bushing yada yada yada) and on reassembaly i noticed the only screw without a nut seemed to slip whenyou tighten it down. after putting a machine screw and nut on both the front and back axle i have no more grinding. Is this a normal problem?
