Default Just Bought this... any tips?

Duratrax Cliff Climber Crawler | eBay

I just bought this Cliffy... I'm fairly new to RC & Crawling RC

Any tips on mods or things to watch for on these?

I'm thinking of giving this to my 6 yo Grandson for Xmas... He loves driving my Axial Scorpian
I'm giving his 13 yo brother and his 10yo sister a pair of Rustlers... Mostly stock...

We take them with us when camping... We have a ball and run the tires off these things.

Your thoughts?

I used to have a Cliff Climber. I don't think it's as much of an out-of-the-box crawling machine that the AX10 is, but I do think it would be a great truck for a kid to drive around in the woods or on some rocks. Should suit your purposes just right.

When I had mine, I thought it lacked in articulation and in power, despite me using the smaller of the optional pinions. I extended the shock mounts and added long Axial shocks, so it did improve the articulation a lot, but the truck still lacked some power when a tire was bound up. I guess I was using NiMH batteries though; LiPo could've helped that problem in hindsight. Regardless - I think the truck will be great for your grandson to beat around.

Awesome info... Thank you for the feedback... I'm sure my grandson will love it. Maybe as he grows... it can grow with him.

Sure, yes I'd say it could grow as he grows. If he gets really into it, he can always use the axles and attach them to a different frame, chassis, body, etc, and turn it into anything he wants. And if the CC is a little underpowered (at least with NiMH batteries), it might help the parts to last longer for him.

Here are a couple photos of my CC: DCC w/ AX10 shocks

He is pretty young... has the attention span of a nat.. LOL

My other cars are way to fast... but my Crawler is just right. So I thought this would be good... I'm sure he will have a blast.

I need to get a pile of rocks in the yard before Xmas... so he can run it right away.

Thanks for the info... I will post my impressions of the truck when I get it.

Sounds good. No problem, glad to help. My son is seven; he has a 1/18 scale Duratrax short course truck. He'll drive it on the track for a little while when I'm at scaler comps, but then he'll come back to the pit tables and play with Legos. Pretty cute, but not extremely into RC at this point. And the truck it a little fast....it suffers breakage often. I did get him an old DX2 transmitter so I could turn down the trottle, which helped *somewhat*.

1. Metal Gears,
2. Ball Bearings
3. shave the axle housings
4. stretch it to 12" (I used longer links and some custom shock mounts - the stock chassis is fine just needs some tweaking),
5. Better tires
6. better shocks (I still use stockers but I have replacements already - the lower caps keep popping off, bad design)
7. 9T pinions (.6 mod)
8. Better electronics (only if you got RTR - otherwise just a better servo)
9. Banebots 395's, or Tamiya RS380SH's or GWS EP400's
10. now you'll need steel out drives
