Default Lipo's gets hot(smokes) as soon as ESC plugged in

Ok I was out crawling today and as of a sudden the rig stops dead. Steering work and dig works put motor just makes all kinds of noises. Next thing you know smoke starts coming out of my lipo. I unplugged it fast and tossed it away from us. Nothing in the rig was hot at all.

I figured the lipo blew up(it has a small dent in it) no biggy. Plugged another Lipo in and instantly starts getting warm so I unplugged it. I checked all the wires and connectors for shorts but dont see anything. I'm going to check in a few what happens if I unhook the motor unplugged.

Any ideals here? The ESC is about 3 months old MM driving a Crawlmaster sport and power is a 3cell lipo. All the servo's (5955TG and 645MG) are run off the CC BEC.

hmpf, well, that deff sounds like a short somewhere. check everything again, and if it still does it, unplug everything except the reciever and servo, see if it still does, if so, unplug servo, and plug motor in, if it still does it, blow it apart with a 12 guage out of anger xP.

Thats what my 2.2 did when I released the magic smoke from within. The smoke came from the Mamba25 though. It now looks like a dogs been chewing on it.

What lipo you running? Are you sure theres no arcing at the ESC where the wires are attached? I had the power wires on my MM come off a while back and had to solder them back on. They broke right at the solder joint. I figured they just broke from being wiggled around to much. Maybe one of the wires is getting frayed and making contact where it shouldn't?????

Just throwing out ideas.

check inside your motor for any debris binding up.....any kind of load like that will more than double your amp draw. outcome hot electrical parts, namely the ESC and battery.

I just rechecked the wires and they all look perfect including the solder joints. Everything looks fine. So I decided to plug it in with the motor unhooked. ESC didnt chime but I'm not sure if it will with the motor unhooked. Nothing got hot at all and all the servo's worked perfect. I unplugged the Lipo and plugged the motor back in and plugged the Lipo back in. Motor does nothing at all and ESc wouldnt chime. I unpluuged the lipo and plugged it back in 3 times before it chimed but no motor power yet.

Motor seems to spin perfect in the rig. I dont have any other motors or ESC's to try either

Internal short in the ESC maybe? I would send it into Castle Creations and see what they say. Who knows, maybe they will replace it for free?!

I've messed with it a bit more. I can do whatever I want as long as the motor isnt plugged in. As soon as I plug it in the batt. with the motor hooked up the batt. gets warm instantly. I'm going to pick up a motor tomorrow to try hopefully.

It's the motor that actually makes the noise, not the ESC. So no,there won't be a chime without the motor plugged in.

Thanks

Hopefully the motor took a dive and not the ESC.

Ok so I plugged the USb in and and everything seemed fine so I switched the ESc to brushed and hooked up a brushed motor I had laying around. Nothing but the battery and ESC got warm instantly.

Tried the brushelss setup again and the motor will just make nosie and rock back and forth like a glitch. Baterry and ESc got warm as well.

I know the brushed motor works fine cause I hooked it a ESC and ran it. The crawlmaster short of having a internal short inside looks fine. No heat or burn marks inside and it was clean inside.

Seems liek the ESc took a dive after all Anyone have any luck sending one of these back to Castle for repairs???

I've not had to send anything back to Castle, but have read they have top notch customer service....on numerous accounts. If it were me,I'd email them and explain everything. Maybe send them a link to this thread so they can read it.

Rig was moving pretty free. Small scattered rocks here and there, kind of a blank spot between some formations.

Thanks Raptorman

Sounds like a short on the battery leads or just a bad ESC to me.
