Lipo's wired in Series or Parallel?

Can Lipo's be wired in series and/or parallel to up the voltage or mah?

examples:

can I wire three (3) 1S cells in series to get 11.1V?

could I wire two (2) 3S pack in parallel to combine their MaH for more runtime?

Would doing either of these setups affect their _C rating?

ex: would three 1S 10C wired in series for 11.1V give me 30C? or would it still stay at 10C?

I'm looking into Lipo's for my next battery and am thinking about my options for creating "saddle" packs since no one makes them (that I've found) or getting 2 cheaper low MaH and wiring them in parallel to double the mah.

after some searching http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showt...o+wired+series
it looks like I can wire them in series, but what about parallel?

and how does either configuration affect the amperage _C rating?

What size?

Here's nine options.

I had just found the saddle packs that MaxAmps has myself when you posted.

You're link doesn't work though - it goes to the picture. Here it is for anyone looking http://www.maxamps.com/products.php?cat=54

This is the one I'm considering getting now: http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-2200-111-Saddle.htm
2200mah 3S2P 11.1V & Maximum Continuous Discharge 33 amps

Oops, thanks.

Does anyone know if I can run a 2 Lipo packs in Parallel to combine their mah for more runtime?

I know I can do this with traditional NiMH cells, but I'm wondering if it would screw up the balancing or whatever of the Lipo's and wreck them?

I'm thinking of getting the 2200 saddle pack (above) and adding another small 3s lipo on the chassis somewhere to get well over 3000mah

JohnRobHolmes 02-25-2008 11:14 PM

Yes you can run them in parallel. I like to keep my parallel lipo packs seperate so that a bad cell can be identified easier. A 3s2p pack has 6 chances of a bad cell, whereas a single 3s pack has 3 chances and can be diagnosed easier.

I charge the packs seperate or as one 6s pack, then run them in parallel for double runtime. My Scaler gets 4200mah sometimes.

Thanks JRH

Does that mean I'd need something like this to keep them balanced while I run and/or charge them? Hyperion LBA10 Network Cable Adapter

I would I simply have 2 connectors to run and charge them? One Parallel connector like This to run and one series connector like This to charge them (or disconnect them and charge separately)

Yes you can run them in series and/or parallel just fine. I would recommend charging each pack seperate, though you definitely can charge them in series or parallel as well.

Series will simply increase the voltage, the c rating will stay the same. so 3 10c 3000mah cells is series will give you an 11.1v 3000mah 10C pack, capable of putting out 30 amps.

Parallel will increase the Mah, but again the C rating will stay the same. so two 11.1v 3000mah 10C packs in series will create an 11.1v 6000Mah 10C pack, capable of putting out 60 Amps.

Parallel for running them, and series for charging them is fastest. You will also need a balancing adapter and LBA10 to get the job done properly. Maxamps should be able to hook you up with a two pack balancing deal.

One more question...

Running them in parallel, would I need to make sure they both have the same mah & C rating? or is it okay to mix them up and I would just have a different max output?

JohnRobHolmes 02-26-2008 01:34 PM

It is best to have the same mah and C rating, but they can be mixed. I don't recommend it though.

Thanks JRH, I just used MaxAmps Live Help and chatted with Jason about it. Got a similar answer. Very helpful and knowledgeable guy.

I'll include the transcript for anyone searching/reading that might have the same questions as me

Aaron : Hi jason, can I run two lipo pack in parallel to combine their mah for more runtime?
Aaron : I am considering your 2200mah 3S2P 11.1V Saddle Pack wired in parallel with another 3S lipo.
Jason Melville : what two 3s packs do you want to run together?
Aaron : your 2200mah 3S2P 11.1V Saddle Pack and another 3S pack
Jason Melville : the reason I ask is that you can only do this with packs of the same cell make up , same brand, and same age
Aaron : would they need to have the same mah & C rating?
Jason Melville : yes same C rating falls into cell make up
Aaron : could I combine that 2200 3S2P with something like Lipo 1100mah 3S 11.1V Pack?
Aaron : these would both be new packs from you guys, so I assume the age would be the same (new)
Jason Melville : yes but you can't mix a saddle pack with say a regular brick pack they don't use the same cells
Aaron : oh, darn
Aaron : I was hoping I could combine it with another to get more runtime
Aaron : I currently run a 3300 sub-c pack and want to upgrade to lipo's, but don't want to go down in mah if at all possible
Jason Melville : Li-Po's will out perform those 3300 sub C's
Jason Melville :
Aaron : yes, I realize they will outperform them, but would they give me just as much runtime?
Aaron : that is my biggest concern with going lipo, is that I don't want to loose any runtime if at all possible
Jason Melville : step up to the 4000 or the 6000 saddle pack
Aaron : but they are just 2S, right?
Aaron : for my new motor, I need the 3S 11.1V
Aaron : this is for crawling with a holmes cobalt puller 7T motor
Jason Melville : call the shop and have the guys custom make what ever you need it won't cost anynore than what the cells are worth.
Aaron : I didn't know I could do that
Aaron : thanks, that sounds like my best option
Jason Melville : http://www.maxamps.com/categories.php?cat=13 Look right under the Axial logo
Aaron : so I could most likely have a 3S saddle pack built with more mah, right?
Jason Melville : yup
Aaron : awesome
Aaron : thank you very much, I didn't see that before
Jason Melville : now you know
Aaron : thanks
Aaron : anyone in specific I should talk to or ask for a certain department when I call that number?
Jason Melville : Josh would be your best bet make sur you check the dimension with him so that what you come up with will fit
Jason Melville : press 2 and then the # key for Josh
Aaron : great! thank you very much Jason

I am going to call them now to build a custom saddle pack.

JRH - What continuous & max Amp discharge rate would your Cobalt 7T require?

JohnRobHolmes 02-26-2008 01:48 PM

Get something with at least 30 amps continuous IMO, maybe a bit more. It is the bursts that will slowly kill the pack, but that will depend on how much throttle you can grab before things break.

Big_Ern 02-26-2008 01:53 PM

Thanks John!

I'm glad to have ordered a motor from a vendor that is so helpful & knowledgeable"thumbsup"

JohnRobHolmes 02-26-2008 02:11 PM

Motors are what I dream about when I nap in the afternoon.
