Got my crazy looking 6t flight type Cobalt motor at a great $29

I know I need to get a LiPo and a good ESC but is this the only way?
I guess a Moped or even a Sidewinder might be out of the question ...Moped can't take the Lipo power and the Sidewinder *I just read cant use 3C Lipos
is this correct?

Overall I would like to know a not hugely expensive option and one that will last in the long run ...

THANKS

ok before i start im no expert on this kind of stuff, but from what ive seen these cobalt design motors pack alot of punch and work best at high voltages. if you dont have to much to spend you could use standard Sub-c cells with along as there over say 2500Mah and use a sidewinder ESC. i plan to run my Mamba Max with a standard 6 cell stick pack on my cobalt 6turn until i have enough cash to do lipo.

A sidewinder would be just fine. A moped would smoke pretty fast.

3s lipo of at least 2100 15C or better would be my suggestion. Go with good cells like enerland.

frankly, a 6t cobalt is probably going to be ridiculous fast on 3 cell lipo, and it'll probably get so hot, it'll only be good for very short runs. I doubt 2/3a cells will be able to power it, so I think your best options would be either a 6 cell sub c pack, or a 2 cell lipo in the 1500-2000mah range. Look for a higher C rating. I'm currently running a 10t cobalt puller on a 3 cell 2100 20c continuous/40c max burst lipo, and it's almost too fast, but the battery is holding up just fine. Come to think of it, a 2 cell a123 battery would probably work about perfectly with that motor.

ESC wise, I think a sidewinder would work fine. It can take 3 cell, but castle doesn't suggest it with their 5700 motor, for reasons that have not been made clear to me. Personally, I'd go with a sidewinder, 2c a123, castle BEC.

Note: you can't charge a123 cells straight off a standard LiPo charger. There are ways to mod lipo chargers for this purpose, but I'd advise an a123 capable charger such as a newer Hyperion charger, as they are the most versitile.

I run a 5t cobalt on 3 cell lipo. It doesn't get above 140f and i like the wheelspeed

You are right that 2/3a cells won't cut it though.

as for charging a123, a two cell pack can be charged as a 6v lead acid and 4 cell as 12v lead acid.

I run a 5T on 3S with no problem. The motor gets warm if I just run it wide open for a while... works great.

Question

What tooth pinion should I use ? I do like the wheel speed too
and I will have to drill the pinion to 4mm , can this be done with my standard drill at home?

would the Mamba Max take higher LiPo ?

I'm running a 10T Cobalt with a MM and 3cell lipo 1345mah 18C 24.2 amp continuous 28C 37.7 amp max burst, it's a Flight Power EVO LITE. Gearing setup is 13/87 with a AX-Trany and TLT axles. I noticed it gets little warm if running to much WOT but nothing to hot where I can't keep my finger on it, thinking about making a heat sink for it to help out some.
