that noise is a cell or cells venting? How hot are they getting when charging? What brand cells are they? Can you check individual cell voltage?

Cells aren't hot at all. Warm but not hot. As far as individual voltage, not w/out cutting the wrap. They are Elite 1600 2/3A's

I've got 8 packs now and every one of them does that right before the charger kicks off. There was a thread a while back about this, and there were some pics from some folks that have even had the cells split open on them, but so far mine all do fine and there's no visual damage. Age of the pack doesn't seem to matter, and neither does the places I got them from, they all vent like that no matter how I charge them.

turn down your amperage a little, maybe 1.0 or 1.3. noise is bad!

Got a temp gun to monitor the cell temps?

how many volts does the pack have in total? you really need to find out if the venting caused a cell to go bad. The noise is by no means "normal"
and it is telling you that something is going wrong....

I have all packs from JRH. My 3 9cell packs do not do it. When I charge my son's 7cell split packs, they make the noise too. I charge at 1amp for everything. Same charger or different same result. I have not seen any temp spike on any packs, just the noise. The noise is constant though out the charge? Hasn't impacted performance.

Noise is not constant. It is towards the end of the charge. It is a 9.6V 8 cell 2/3a pack and the damn thing has 11v in it now. I think the charger might be screwed? Cells are barely warm at all

8cell packs peak way higher than 9.6v
I've got 2 packs that are 10cell packs(12v) that peak over 16v. But mine don't vent.

Bringing this back up from a few months back... I just witnessed my 6 cell 2/3A pack PFFTT right before charging was complete. I think all the calls did it in like a 10 second period, then the charger went to trickle mode. The cells were warm but not hot. I have heard the noise before. It doesn't seem to affect anything as far as runtime goes.

Any difinitive answers about the mysterious PFFFTT? I know they are venting, and it sounds like many people's 2/3As do this... so is it typical? OK?

I have three battery packs all 2/3A 8 cell 1500 and all three do it right before they shut off. I have two different chargers and they do it on both chargers. They peak right at 1350 11.6V... Also a few other guys that run the same batteries here locally have the same thing happen right before they go to trickle mode...

Yes, normal. I have a couple 8cell 2/3a GP1100 packs that I built and none of them vent (make any noise)!!! This is not normal. I charge at 1 amp all the time and occasionally top them off at 0.2 or 0.5 amps when I have time....after they have fully cooled from the previous peak charge at 1 amp.

ya, venting cells says bad cell, or poor manufacture. im no battery or electronics expert, but i know enough if any battery pffs at you, its Not a good thing. its not making a pass at you. lol

ive never dealt with a123 cells, but any battery that pffs at you, is looking to cause damage imo. again im not an expert, but when NiMH or NiCD batterys pffft, they like to go POP shortly afterwards.

Timmahh, Please re-read this thread....nobody said anything about A123 cells....they said 2/3a (size) cells.

Just to throw another idea in the pot, don't confuse the sound of venting cells with transformer buzz on your charger. From a distance they can sound the same, but if you listen carefully transformer buzz is actually a high pitch buzzing noise that comes from the charger, not the pffffffftt sound of a venting cell. My chargers quite often have transformer buzz, and it comes and goes depending on where they are in the cycle.
