Default fried rx=fried crystal too?

I fried my rx by plugging in the servo and esc backwards (d'oh).
I replaced both but reused my crystals.

Today I tried to get the rig to work under its own power and I got nothing. Turn the sidewinder on and it wont read the radio. I couldnt get it to do its basic programming on its own, lights just kept blinking. when we turned the transmitter off, esc still on, the steering servo would glitch madly.

To pinpoint where the problem was we tried swapping a receiver from another rig into this one and using that transmitter/receiver it did sync up and we did get steering. tried forward motion and transmission wanted to move but wouldnt. THAT problem I think is just the pinion too tight up against the spur gear.

So, did I also fry the crystal when I fried the rx? I dont have another crystal to try because the receiver is a micro one from robotics.
This is the receiver. you can see the wiring that fried it originally...

I should note that I bought this stuff used from a friend (Jaynen, member here) and that the rx, tx both worked flawlessly on his rig.

specs:
esc is a new sidewinder 1/10 sport esc.
receiver is as stated, GWM or something like that. 4 channel.
motor is a novak fifty-five 55t
R2 trans
transmitter is airtronics mx-3 (non spektrum)
battery is 6-cell nimh 2000 (currently but I swap them around so it could at any time be 4200, 3600, 2000, 1900).

I've checked the connections and they all seem good and strong with solid solder connections where appropriate.
liek this but with battery slightly different

so, where do I start to troubleshoot this? crystal?
I really am stumped...
