Default servos - metal or Ti gears?

I'm looking to build my first crawler and want to get it right the first time. I've pretty much narrowed the servo selection down to the new Hitec 7955TG or one of the high-end JR's, like this DS8711. The question is, how often do people realistically strip metal gears? Am I going to be better off with the Hitec because of its titanium gears? Or will it even matter? I've heard from a bunch of people that are really pushing their JR's so I'm starting to lean that way, but if I'm going to run a 11.1v 3-cell lipo pack, CC BEC, and Tekin FX-R, will I have enough power to strip regular metal gears? Or will it not even be a problem?

I have the exact same question, I was looking at both servos myself.

I have not stripped any gears in a 5955TG (the previous generation of the 7955TG). I have stripped some in the 645MG. In fact, none of my 5955TGs has ever given me any troubles...

BTW, I have run one of my 5955s in an on road car, 2.2 and super crawler.

The material that the gears are made of is not the only factor in calculating the strength.Dia and pitch can make up for useing weaker materials and some grades of alloyed steel have a greater shear strength than some grades of Ti. I personaly have never heard of somone stripping the gears out of an 8711....but I'm sure it can be done. I'm sure somone could strip the gears out of any servo. Both of these servos are an excellant choice......that being said I prefer the 8711.

Good points.

Why do you prefer the 8711? Do you have any experience with the Hitec?

It's looking like I would be perfectly happy with either servo, so it might just come down to price and availability.

I have not tried the 7955tg,(5955) but i have friends that use them and when the drive my truck they say"I want your servo" Again, both are good and will steer when and where you want. I had a 645mg before and I'll never go back.If you get the chance, drive someone's truck with both servos before you make your choice.

I switched to a 5955TG after destroying my last metal gear servo.

It is working flawlessly and has ZERO slop where-as another servo with the same usage would be LOOSE.

I will use nothing but Titanium geared servos in my crawlers from now on

Hitec, all the way. Customer service is 2nd to none. you send them a messed up servo. no box, nothing, they send you a new one.... I had a friend send out a whole BOX of out dated servos that were messup, from broken casses to stripped gears of the years of hard core bashing and racing... a week later he gets a box in FULL of brand new servos. easy and simple. LIFETIME warranty. JR servos (dont get me wrong, i run those aswell) are super strong. RJ = 2years covered. +there not made out of one of the strongerest metals around; Titanium.
Double check you EPAs and make sure you dont go over 6v if its not rated for it and you will be ok. The Ti geared servos are on the top of my list when i build something new. You can find 5955TG's for less than $80 now, since the new 7955TGs came out. Thats shipped and NIP! You figure, you buy one servo and one servo only. You will be set for the life of your rig. You can strip anything if its not set up right and you have enough stress on em. If you decide to buy a low end servo, then you will end up buying another one down the road. After time and money spent replacing, you could have gotten a nice TG geared Hitec.

1) EPAs
2) Voltage
3) Alum servo horn is good aswell.
Some nice things to watch and pick up.
Just my .2.... Good Luck and remember to watch your EPAs and Volts

JR claims a three-year warranty, whereas Hitec only claims two. Where did you hear that Hitec has a lifetime warranty?

i am running 5995tg's in 2 of my trucks and have only broken a main shaft recently , i sent it to hitec and 4 days later it showed up brand new . instead of repairing they sent a new one .

hitec tops the chart for customer service in my book

JR servos are nice, but I too prefer the Hitec servos.

Never had an issue w/ my 5995TGs and Hitec's customer service is the best.

I had a Hitec 5945mg and stripped the center gear 4 times. Got tired of it and bought a 5995tg and first time out somehow the amplifier blew(not even sure what an amplifier does)...I sent it to Hitec and they fixed it no questions asked, had it back within a week. I don't think I'm extremely hard on my truck but I'm not afraid to beat on it...I'll stick with Hitec as long as I can't tear up the TG to much. Good customer service goes a long way in my book..

I have a couple Hitec 5955TG servos and i have a JR 8711 and a JR 9100T (JR's most powerful servos and Hitec's most powerful servo).

I have not EVER had a problem with either one... Imo, neither one is better than the other. I have BEAT them into the ground in every possible way (even ran them in my 1/8th scale race MBX5T truggy).

Both are excellent servos and you can go wrong with either one

I checked all the vendors that support the board, none of them had it for cheaper than $110. Thanks for getting those prices for me.
