Unhappy out came the magic smoke/need help

Alright so I have been into rc's for some years now so not a noob or anytihng but I did make a boo boo. Got a ezrun 60a brushless kit for my slash. I also got a 2s lipo for it. so I got everything wired up and plugged in battery and poof out comes some magic smoke from the capacitor mini board off the esc. I charged my lipo before and it read fine and charged fine on my charger. esc is rated for 3s so it can handle it. so I unhook battery real quick and that's when i saw the problem. I hooked up my deans plug backwards on my esc. so i wired up deans right way and hook up a different battery(7 cell nimh) and poof more smoke comes out. now My charger just says connection break and won't read my lipo at all.
I tried just hooking up the battery to a low voltage pc fan and it doesn't budge. So did it fry my lipo and my esc. I got a little pic of the cappacitor board below.am i screwed and screwed up my lipo and esc or what. ANY help appreciated.

here is the esc I got.

was mad so i put it away then started looking at 35 a esc online an dnotice they don't have the cappacitor board. so i hooked up my working battery after snipping the wires off the board and it powers up. weird. so what do the cappacitors do then. just allow the esc to handle more amps.
got a battery on the charger and gonna try it out. the 2s lipo is dead though and will not power anything. is it possible for it to damaged from hooking up to esc backwards or did i just buy a junk battery

The cap board is probably a knock off of our transcap modules developed for Novak ESCs. Here is info on Novak modules, and power caps, in general:

NOVAK ELECTRONICS POWER CAPACITOR
