Default looking for some good wheel speed help...

currently i have a novak 55, rooster crawler esc. stock axial pinion and spur. and using 8 cell 1500mah split pack on front axles. after using it for quite a while i have some wheel speed issues. i was never really fast in the first place. i was wondering if i should go down some turns on the motor,or just go lipo? mess with gear ratio? im not really into going brushless. was wondering what are some good setups, for good torque and wheel speed. any advice is appreciated

I would say go down to a 45t or 35t motor...im running a 55t and 18t pinion and it isn't quite fast enough...going brushless tho

Go with a 3cell lipo 11.1V. This will give you an appreciable difference in wheel speed and torque.

If you are running a 12/87 gear setup change that first. A 15/87 would be much better.
If that is still not enough wheelspeed then go to a 35T Torquemaster from Holmes Hobbies with the 15/87 gearing.

I ran the 35T on 11.1V with 15/84 gearing on my GC2 and it had all the wheelspeed I ever wanted, almost too much. With you 8 cell pack it should be a nice setup.

im guessing 12/86 is axial "stock" so thats what im running. 15/87 with a 45 sounds good. you say it has almost "too much" so a step down. i figure cuz i want a good amount of torque w/ wheel speed. thanks much!!!

Axial stock gearing is 14/87

A 45T should put you in the ballpark with an 8 cell, and then you can tweak with pinions...they're cheap ;)

The 35T on 11.1V has almost too much. A 35T or 45T with your 8 cell would be really nice.

CreepyCrawl says stock is 14/87 (I've never bought an Axial kit, only the axles and tranny) so the gearing is prolly pretty good. If you want to spend less money you could try an 18 tooth pinion but that wont get you much more.

3 Cell Lipo is the hot ticket for wheelspeed, but you don't want to go to 3 cell with the speed control you have, you'll burn it up. Try a 45 or even 35 turn motor, and if you're still not happy go get a speedo that can handle the volts (I like the Mamba Max and the Tekin FX-R. The sidewinder is also apparently good, I've just never had one. Also, Holmes Hobbies is eventually coming out with a good speedo with a good switching BEC built-in. It looks like Castle is gonna make it, so it will probably be worth the wait) and a 3 cell.

As a side note, I was really never happy with the 45 and 35 turn integy lathes. They just don't have much torque. The handwounds (brood, HH, JP's etc... but not Integy. Their handwounds are not very good IMO) seem to have way more torque and low speed control. Well worth the extra if you ask me. I had one of the early 35T warriors in my old shafty and it was awesome. Second only to the cobalt puller that replaced it

I would start by stepping up to a 16t pinion. Then if you still want more wheel speed get a 45t or 35t motor. I am running 16t/87t gearing with a HHH 35t and 3s lipo and it flat halls the mail. I am about to step up to my 7t puller and gear the tranny down to a 12t/88t combo and going with the hi gearing bevels in the front axle. Thats another option for you as well. Get a set of the option hi gear bevels for the front axle and that combined with a 16t pinion will make a big improvement on wheel speed as well as help reduce toque twist and also help on steep climbs.

So all that being said I would get a 16t pinion and also a set of the optional hi gear bevels for the front axles.

the pc set-up is worth the money. just make sure you get a castle link for the sidewinder.

I have the sidewinder and a cc bec the castle link is well worth the money. You can program just about every thing for it and you don't have to read some stupid manual and follow beeps. The castle link is also way cheaper than the tekin hotlink

I'm with the 35T and 11.1 Lipo is almost to much....ALMOST. I have a 35T and 7Cell and its just right for me, your 8C might be the ticket, running 16 T pinion and stock spur in my Axial scaler.

I put my 5700kv and Mamba with my 11.1 Lipo.....that's to much. Kinda cool dukes of hazard tire screaching on the cement though!!!!!
