High torque servo?
 
Ok, so, I've got a CS-170 servo now, and it's acting stupid, so I'm looking for a better one, what're some suggestions, I'm torn between a jr9100T and whatever the big bad airtronics one is...

Any servo under 400 oz needs not be listed.
I own the Futaba and you need aluminum servo arms so the splines do not strip. "thumbsup"

I've looked at most of em so far.....and am a bit torn on the options, most of them look about the same....and as far as the 7.4V ones, how do you check what radios are safe to run that kind of voltage through, and more importantly, what happens to the non-7.4V servos.....

OH, and according to towerhobbies it says that futaba S9157 is NiCD only? why would that be? nimh and any of the lithium batteries too much amperage on demand or something?

all of these high torque servos should be run through a bec, so the radio shouldnt be a concern.

here is my opinion for what it is worth. I have ran the JR's and am done with them. while they are fast and strong the plastic a gear is a joke. the damb things self destruct. three of my friends have had the same issue. and all of these have been run .5 volts below their ratings.

the Futabas have been having gear failure issues due to the top of the plastic case flexing. Ive even seen one slit down the middle within 1min of instalation.

I havent ran an airtronics, so I dont know.

the hitecs have never let me down, they will get week but the gears never fail. I have already ordered my new 7950's all three of them. I hope they are as good as there predicessors

I'm running a CCBEC, but, you still have to run that through the rx unit, which you've got to worry about overpowering.....

I've actually been leaning towards a hitec.....now, the challenge, finding someplace that has both a decent hitec servo, AND, a good aluminum horn for it.....

No, you can use the CC BEC to power the steering servo, but use the ESC BEC to power the Rx and any auxiliary servos.

Wire everything as you normally would, without a BEC.
Wire the BEC direct to your battery.
Lift the red and black wires from the steering servo plug, leaving the yellow wire connected to the Rx.
Connect the red and black wires to the CC BEC.

You can run the servo off the bec directly. Hook the bec wires to power it up to your battery.
Then take your + and - wires from your servo and hook them up to the + and - output of the bec.
The only thing left from the servo will be the signal wire. Plug that into your esc.
Just leave the bec signal wire unplugged. Its for programming only."thumbsup"

The servo horn to get!!!

actually, I think my problem is binding.....I'm gonna tweak my servo mounts and see if I can shift the mount back about 1/4" and cure the issue.....hopefully, since nobody can get a servo here in time and nobody's got one more than about 150 oz-in in stock locally...

Most Hitec (high torque) servos come with a aluminum horn for them.

I think you can have to much usable torque. I had my servo turned up to 7.4V with 416 oz in torque and all it did was kill my battery real fast. I turned it down to 6V with 333oz in torque and didnt notice any differance in torque. But now my battey lasts longer.

Steer clear of both the JR and the airtronics, they are both know to be POS. Go with the Futaba S9157. Runs on 6v so it is alot easier to set up your bec. Also runs nice and cool. TONS of power. Only high torque servo worth buying IMO.

Anything can happen at a blink of an eye...run it till it goes...you should be good for quite a while.

Remember, you want speed plus torque....an AX10 may work fine with 100 oz. torque, just pick one with the fastest speed because it will feel the most natural to drive.

the one that's in it now is 333 oz-in and .15sec @ 6V, not a problem with the steering or speed, just that it seems like it's sticking in either direction when turned at full lock and not moving....it's not wanting to re-center on its own.... as far as feeling most natural....it's a 4WS rig, run with dual sticks....it's not gonna feel natural ;)
