I did that with a broken micro-servo. hooked the output leads to a relay, and use it as a remote killswitch for the motor on my Baja, works great.
Since I used a micro servo the pot and board were tiny. instead of soldering resistors in place of the pot I just ca'd the pot in the center position.

I know this is really old, but just finding this, I tried doing it using the Pot, but all i get is bright dim... Any idea why? bad pot? would i be better off getting the resistors? thanks in advance. also will this work on chan 4 of a traxxas tx/rx (the summit TX) possibly for on/dim/bright?
