|  swollen lipo ?
I have a lipo battery that has swollen a bit . It still charges and works fine and charger reads good on both cells . Is this safe ? Should i stop running it and take it as a loss ? It doesnt get very hot but I read that lipo can explode .

I have a 3s that has been "puffy" for almost 3 years now. Balance charge it thru the taps and keep an eye on it and it should be fine. Just to be safe charge it in a lipo bag or other suitable fire safe container.

you're right, lipos can explode. personally, i probably wouldn't run a puffed battery. i'm in the mindset of better safe than sorry. it may still be ok to run, but i would hate to see my truck go up in flames just cause i didn't want to replace my battery.

had one explode it was a lil puffy for about 6 charges then one day im doing a few forwards and reverses playin with my cat and boom it wasnt loud kinda less than a balloon but it did start to smoke a lot had the smoke alarm go off and it was only in the house a few seconds after the boom and very lil fire if any luckily i got it out the door and had a towel right there to take the lipo out and let it smoke on the driveway just so you know and the smoke from it stunk so bad it burnt my eyes and the house smelled a lil off for a few days i guess im the negative side for puffy batteries Quote:

If your battery manufacturer has a support line, call them. I received a new MaxAmps Lipo form a member in a deal we made that was swollen. My balancer shows that the cells are good. It holds its charge, and gives me the power I need. I have used it many times, but in the back of my mind, I worry that it will "pop" on me. A good lipo sack or something similar would be a good idea.

I have had alot of experience dealing with swelling lipos and they usaully stay around for awhile as long as you watch them on the charging cycle, I would also invest in a charging bag they are just a few bucks. Happy Lipo Charging  rock Rebelz Team Driver

Thanx guys I think Im gonna order a new one before I burn something up . My buddy says he will use it and offered to trade it for a 5 deans pairs and a spare set of wheels . Not a bad deal . I think im gonna take him up on it .

I have had quite a few lipos go "wonky" and "puffy" in my day (sorta like my black eye  ) My take is if the battery is working fine... KEEP AN EYE ON THE SUCKER... I had a 3S that just decided one day to go "wonky" (I had noticed a reduced amount of power and normally after a run it came off cool, it was coming off hot, no changes in anything, hotter than the motor  ) I decided its fate was near. Sure enough when charging it started to go "pufffy" so... out to the backyard and it met its demise with a blow torch .Lets say this, imagine a puddle of gas being fed by a propane source burning "wherever"... its not a fun idea in your house. I personally am CHEAP and I just use a ceramic bowl that holds the battery, so it can help hold the flames and direct them up. Some indoor tracks... require you to charge lipos in a "liposack" for one simple reason, they prevent everyone's stuff from going poof |
