Default Motor fried?

Ok, so this is the 1st motor i took apart to see if i could fix it. The picture is from my phone so its not good. The motor gets caught and quits turning and im guessing its because of that warn section you can see in the picture. If i spin the motor after it locks up it seems to work again until i stop it.

Can this be fixed or is it junk at this point?

Hard to tell from that picture IF you can turn the comm... no question it needs it. you have any calipers? if so try and measure the deepest part of the brush groove in the comm. What motor is that out of? Do you have access to a comm lathe?

No i only have basic hand tools. I dont even know what a comm is

Its like there is a chunk missing where is rubs against the brushes.

sorry, comm= communitator... it's the part of the armature thats all chewed up in the picture.

Without a comm lathe or at least access to one the armature is done...it's probably done anyway as the grooves look to deep to lathe out.

If you have access to a big lathe you'd find in a machine shop,I'd at least try it. I've turned a few comms down on a big collet lathe at the shop before. A bit overkill for the job,but it can be done.

What do you run this motor in? Voltage, gearing, weight? That is pretty rough looking.

Check around with some of the local racers... they probably all run brushless now BUT one of them may still have a comm lathe collecting dust... a comm lathe back in the day's of brushed racing was a near MUST have.

If the above don't work, see if you can get some calipers and measure the comm to make sure it can still be cut. If it can be saved, you can send the arm to me... I'll true it for you for free seeing a good handwound end up in a trash can makes me

Well, you can only turn down a comm so far.....so a big lathe really isn't gonna do anything a normal motor comm lathe will.

I am gonna say though, by looking at the photos, that comm is toast, which makes the arm toast. Time for a new motor.
