Default Removing the POT from a servo

Im looking at trying to make a servo into a winch.Ive done some searching but not gotten a direct answer to my question. first ill mess around with my stock traxxas servos to see how easy it is, plus i dont have $40 for another high torquer. Anyways, the POT (potentiometer) is soldered directly to the cicruit board with 3 'prongs'. If i were to unsolder those prongs would my servo be fine or should i just grind the POT down so it doesnt engage the gear and CA it to the neutral position? thanks.

I ended up just cutting th POT shaft down. Thanks for the links, the first was really the only one that helped. I was suprised at what my traxxas 2055 servo could do, Im sure ill crap my pants when I see what a nice high torquer would do.
