metal antenna...

is there any way to take out the metal antenna and put in a softer version on the controller??? meaning can i use like 10guage wire? reason i ask is cause my son is a little dangerous wit the pulled out long metal antenna. dont really want to go to 2.4 for him cause its better if he has to stay by his rig. he is young. he is 4 but does very well. a lil' throttle happy but still pretty good. would feel safer if i could make such a mod.. thanks..

If you want him to have to stay right by the rig, don't pull the antenna up. Should still get 30-40 feet of range.

Just pull it out a bit and leave the smaller more delicate sections inside. I used to do that when I ran ground frequencies.

+1, if you DON'T pull the antenna out a bit, you run the risk of damaging the transmitter.

How is that? The antenna is just there to help increase the range on the transmitter

If it can't get the signal out (fully collapsed antenna) it backfeeds the output chip and fries it over time.
Read any radio/TX manual for a unit that has a collapsable antenna. Same goes for transmitting with an antenna removed.

cool, but back to my original question

can i mod it to be just a wire? i let him run his old rc wit ant. only thick tubes up. thin tubes still pushed in. he is still a menace wit the dog and his sister near by. lol i know he is young but he enjoys it very much and i just dont have the funds to get him a 2.4... i will continue to do the half in/out deal if not possible. i also have a plastic wheel from one of his smaller tonka truck on end of ant. so its not just a fencing sword for him. lol i appreciate once again all the input and merry christmas to you all... "thumbsup"

Ya Ya I know the disclaimer says not recommended for pistol grip car radios, but when was the last time you were more than 20' or so from your crawler when running?

thank you...

i am going to probably try that ant... i hear you about the 20'... i just got my honcho for xmas from the misses but i have been working on mods for my sons. i never went 20' away and i am happy about that for him. so its really just about him being dangerous wit a metal whip.... lol thank you again. "thumbsup"

There is no reason you couldn't just use a wire. The antennas are not loaded or anything. The problem is making one that is the right length for the freq so it doesn't cause feedback problems. It would need to be the same length as the metal one, which would be a tripping hazard for a 4 year old I imagine.

yeah, he is about as tall as the ant.. lol

i believe there 2 kinds of people in this world. NINJA's and PIRATE's. my son is a pirate for sure. not the most graceful lil guy so a long wire ant might not be good for him.. lol (stagger, crawl, stagger, stagger, crawl, stagger.. lol) i do appreciate all the infor and help. the link to the spring ant looks promising. or the dog and his lil sister will just have to learn to duck or bleed... lol thank you all again very much...
