| Ceramic Bearings in a Crawler Motor
Are ceramic bearings worth the extra cost in a crawler motor? Any real performance gain? That would be noticable to the throttle finger. |

Not in a crawler. High level racer, maybe.

Worth it, sure....... Putting Ceramic Bearings in your motor is no different than putting them in the rest of the crawler...... Unless you are competing on a high level, I don't think they are needed, but in high end competitions, every ounce counts. Later EddieO |

I do sir, just for motors though......... I looked into getting them for xr10 and berg kits, but the price to get in was nutty.........and its hard to compete with Avid, Acer, and Boca on price. Bearings are a VERY volume driven business. The more you buy, the WAY cheaper they get. Later EddieO |

Just an option.....cost is too great to put them in all motors. A set of motors would increase by $30.....with motor prices already at $120 a pair for handwounds, would simply put them out of reach for many drivers. I do plan on doing a LE with ceramic bearings one of these days though. Later EddieO |

kind of on this topic....will the ceramic bearings last any longer in a mud-water-dust eating scaler motor than steel bearings? I've never personaly ran ceramics in anything and was curious about their life span compared to steel.

I am not going to claim to be an expert on these, but the way they have always been explained to me, is that because ceramic is so hard, any dirt or what that gets in the bearing will have a tougher time chewing up the ball, where as a steel one could get chewed up pretty bad. Keep in mind though, most ceramic bearings out there are hybrids, so the rest of the bearing can get chewed up...... Ceramic bearings work best in areas with a lot of load on them..... The main gripe with ceramics is price and the fact they can be brittle if impacted hard, though it seems to be not much of an issue for RC... Later EddieO |

I'm not sure how small they are made but you can get full ceramic. They are pretty pricey though.
