Default Castle ESC up in Smoke!

So went to drive the truck today and got maybe 20' on a rock pile when the ESC sounded like it cut off and then back on. The truck quit moving and then appeared the white smoke. When I looked at the esc the whole side of the case looks melted on the side where the negative wire goes into the case. Here are the specs....

Sidewinder SCT ESC
3s lipo
CCBEC
holmes hobby outrunner brushless

I think its the stock axial spur gear with a 21 tooth pinion?

Anyone have any ideas what may have caused this? I just got the ESC, the BEC, and the lipo's. I am stunned. Gonna call castle on monday I guess.....

Sometimes bad esc's make it out of the factory. It happens with all companies. Just give them a ring and they will help you.

Ok so i called castle and they told me it sounds like a battery problem. They told me to send it in and they would look at it. When I told them I was runnin a holmes hobby outrunner motor they said they didnt know if their ESC could handle a brushless outrunner motor. So i am gonna email some pics to HH and see if they can give me some specs on the older outrunner that i am running. The weird thing is the motor was being ran on another sidewinder befor with no problems. When it rains it pours!

It should be fine with my outrunner, most likely a revolver or Crawlmaster. Send some pics of the mount face or the rear and I can send motor information to Castle if needed.

Thanks John i am gonna try and get some pics when i get home of the motor. I dont think its the revolver. Its silver and just about all of the writing is wore off the label.

I hope the 3s isnt too much. I dont think yhe outrunner is over 4000kv. The esc says it will handle 3s on a motor lower than 4600kv i think.

When i called castle they said the motor that comes with the esc was the only difference. All programming was the same and still able to have the crawler drag brake.

Ah, an oldie. Revolver 2, 2212 frame if I recall correctly. No way that caused the ESC to go up, it is a tiny motor.

what would make that SW go south....other threads i'v read they can handle higher then 4s batt's....when i talked to castle bout my problem i have john from posting in your thread the new v2 isn't much different from orig SW....the SCT SW kit is the v2 SW from what CC told me....plus they have motor combo kits out with the 5700kv or 5400kv forget which it is at this moment....the 21t pinion gear he said he has would just add wheel speed to his crawler.........bob

....

Pinion. Get a 12-14t. You don't have much gear reduction going on.

What tires you running?

I run a Sidewinder on 4S with Holmes 1100kv outrunner...Sweet scaler setup. It
defiantly was not your motor that caused the problem. My sidewinder is cool to
the touch after bashing with a 4S, ya just got unlucky..send it back. Castle will
hook ya up.

Thanks for the input guys. I am trying the 21 pinion to boost wheel speed. Hasnt really been driven much to say a lot about it. It is nice not to creep from one spot to the next.

The 21t pinion seems weird, but if you didn't change the spur I guess it's just like changing a few teeth on the spur and a couple on the pinion. The 21 will cause the ESC and motor to have to work harder when crawling. I still don't think it's enough to cause the ESC to let go though. I hope they help you out on this one...it seems like a faulty unit.
