You have to install an external low voltage disconnect (LVC) for it to work. Of course you will have to waterproof that as well.

Novak makes some as do others.

i don't think that a LVC will work for an XL-5, however a lipo alarm will

The latest version of the XL5 has LVC and handles up to 3s.

Model number TRA3018R

This model has a blue label on it versus the white label of the non-LVC model and it also says Low Voltage Detection on it.

Perhaps sell yours and replace it with the updated model?

Does yours have the white label or the blue label on it?

Creepycrawl is correct.

Where do you see this because Traxxas doesn't have it in there specs and neither does anywhere else I can find.

The Traxxas site doesn't show updated info in the tech box or the main pic, but if you click on the 3018R under ESCs the top pic is correct...they haven't corrected the main info page.

This speedo is showing up in all the XL5 equipped trucks so I would expect that it will be available seperately very soon.

EDIT: I would guess that it will most likely be a running change and the non-LVC XL5 will be phased out, rather than be available as a seperate component.

Does the lvc actually work on 3s? I know the old ones will handle 3s but I thought the new ones only had a lvc setup for 2s.

a main hobbies has the newer xl-5 with low voltage detection available as a single component.

I'm pretty certain that it's rated for 3s.

There's one in stock at my local shop; I'll check the specs on the box tomorrow while I'm there.

XL5 was out of stock when I went back, but I did find some info on the Traxxas forum.

A Traxxas rep posted some info and it appears that the new version uses the same firmware as the VXL 3s ESC which means 3s compatibility

I also read that the cut off is set at 3.2 volts per cell.

Here's the post:

Latest XL-5 ESCs DO have Low Voltage Detection (LVD), and it works just like the LVD in our Velineon speed controls.

The question is: does YOUR XL-5 have LVD? If the front edge of the ESC case's decal says "Low Voltage detection, then YES, it does. If it DOESN'T say it, then it DOESN'T have it. See post above. (Thanks, Fatboy)

From the Velineon manual, XL-5 works the same way:

Low-Voltage Detection Setting
The Velineon VXL-3s electronic speed control is equipped with built-in
Low-Voltage Detection. The Low-Voltage Detection circuitry constantly
monitors the battery voltage. When the battery voltage begins to reach
the minimum recommended discharge voltage threshold for LiPo battery
packs, the VXL-3s will limit the power output to 50% throttle. When the
battery voltage attempts to fall below the minimum threshold, the VXL-3s
will shut down all motor output. The LED on the speed control will slowly
blink red, indicating a low voltage shutdown. The VXL-3s will stay in this
mode until a fully charged battery is connected.

Your model includes a Power Cell NiMH battery. The VXL-3s speed control’s
Low Voltage Detection has been disabled for best performance with
this battery. The speed control’s LED will glow red when it is turned on,
indicating Low Voltage Detection is disabled. Be certain to activate Low-
Voltage Detection if you install LiPo batteries in your model. Never use LiPo
batteries while Low-Voltage Detection is disabled.

Verify that Low-Voltage Detection is DISABLED:
1. Turn on the transmitter (with the throttle at neutral).
2. Connect a fully charged battery pack to the VXL-3s.
3. Press and release the EZ-Set button to turn the VXL-3s on. If the LED is solid red, then the Low-Voltage Detection is DISABLED (not safe to use LiPo
batteries). If the LED is solid green, then Low-Voltage Detection is ACTIVATED.

To activate Low-Voltage Detection (LiPo setting):
1. Make sure the LED on the VXL-3s is on and red.
2. Press and hold the EZ-Set button for ten seconds. The LED will turn off and then light green. Also, a “rising” musical tone will be emitted from the motor.
3. Low-Voltage Detection is now ACTIVATED.

To disable Low-Voltage Detection (NiMH setting):
1. Make sure the LED on the VXL-3s is on and green.
2. Press and hold the EZ-Set button for ten seconds. The LED will turn off and then light red. Also, a “falling” musical tone will be emitted from the motor.
3. Low-Voltage Detection is now DISABLED.

It takes more than firmware to be 3s compatible though. The FET's have to be able to handle the voltage for it to work. That's hardware and no amount of programming can get you around it.

True indeed.

Considering the difference in size between the two, I think a phone call to Traxxas tech to verify is in order.

EDIT:

Just got off the phone with John at Traxxas support.

The new XL5 with LVC is only rated for 2s Lipo/8 cell NiMH...max of 9.6 volts.
