Default Newbie to Lipos

Hey, guys

Newbie to Lipo questions. What is the C value on Lipo batteries and what is its significance? What exactly happens to Lipo when it gets run too low? Why choose Lipo over Nimh?

1-This link..... http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/?si...&apage=faq.asp covers most of your questions, please read & then buy from them. I have been buying from them for many years with no issues. They also support this forum.

Quickie answers.....

"C" rating is how fast you pull or push power out of/into a battery. The bigger "C" the better (provided you believe the numbers).

If you get a LiPO too low, you WILL kill it at a minimum. Worst is you start a fire.

LiPO can supply more power in a smaller/lighter package than NiCad or NiMH.

I still run NiMH in 12th pan, 10th pan & 10th offroad buggies. Mostly because I have lots of decent packs for these vehicles.
I ONLY run LiPO in my crawler.

Eventually I will likely convert everything to LiPO, but most of my ESC's don't have a LVC (low voltage cutoff) that is really required for LiPO's.

Default More newbie on LIPO

so pretty much LIPO's buy you more power from a smaller package but also require more care as they have to be kept charged while in storage. If you are a basher but wanting to evolve into some levels of 2.2 comp it sounds as if they would be advantageous. What brands of chargers and batteries would the forum reccommend?

I will have to get a new charger, as I only have a MRC Super Brain for NICAD's and batteries.

If there are 20 brands, there will be 20 replies.
I run a Venom ProCharger (my son has one as well) and 2S & 3S LiPO packs from CheapBatteryPacks.com (for my son & I).

Others will chime in with some acceptable & lesser expensive options.

A quick look at the 1st page in this forum will answer some of your questions, no need for a search.

The type of rig you are running will have some bearing on what you should get.

Charlie is right...20 different answers. I figure if it charges lipo, has a lipo balancer (or you have one) it should work for you.

I myself use a onyx 230..am looking at the 245.

just make sure you have a lipo bag...not only for charging but for storage.

I was looking at the ONYX 230 but wasn't sure if i wanted it. does that have a balancer? that might sway my opinion.

I have the onyx 235 and it does balance charge, two options that I would like that it doesn't have is storage charge and a discharge. Other than that it works just fine and the 10 model memory is nice.

no it doesn't have a balancer, but it does have 10 battery models..very easy to set up and can charge at all different amps..are there better chargers...sure, but for the price....I like it

I would take a balancer (for LiPO packs) before the 10 model memory. But, that's my preference.

Its nice when you have 6 different types of batteries...you can just go to that memory number and hit start. This way you don't have to have 6 different battery chargers, or set up each time you want to charge a battery.
