I ran two fans on my Novak 21.5 in my VTA racing car. My motor temps would be over 190* without them. I ran a Tekin RS Pro speedo with the boost turned up all the way. My car was fast though. With the fans, temps never got above 160*.

These are very common in RC racing.....though some rules only allow one fan. Motors get to extreme temps sometimes, especially on high bite tracks or outdoors in hot weather.... Some idiots use these to compensate for bad gearing, but they rarely save the day..... Certainly nothing is being done wrong.....that's just how racing works. Later EddieO |

The only problem I have is that people sometimes don't realize that an improperly fitting heat sink can cause more issues than no heat sink at all. Other than that in certain applications this type setup is necessary.

I was always told that a fan on your motor is like a band aid on a broken leg. When you take temps off your motor, that's the can, not the actual wiring. So I think of it like an electric stove top. Just because the water is boiling at 100* doesn't mean the coils red glow is 100*....... but hey, I could be wrong. |

That fan/sink combo looks big..... Maybe people are compensating?

If you are compensating for over gearing the a fan is not the solution and the wrong use. However, if you are trying to insure good airflow over your motor then it is fine. I have run fans myself in applications where I didn't have enough natural airflow over the motor.

The fans came on pretty strong as we started hitting the 3800+ mah cells that had voltages of 1.2x+ at 35 amps.....which doesn't sound like a lot, but when you consider GP3300 packs were lucky to see 1.15 at 30 amps.....its a big difference. Voltage=Heat....especially on foam. Not much need for them in offroad, was mostly a Touring Car thing.... Later EddieO Quote:

You might need it if your running brushed in a LCC. |

Lots of people run them in brushless slashes, because the motor is halfway covered up, and SC are heavy for a 1/10 scale racer.
