Default steering servos

i am still new here and my searching hasnt lead me far.
i blew my steering servo today on my max project.
i need some advice on servos.
i want some good torque but dont wanna spend a fortune.
i will be running them through a "y" harness for 4ws.
the one i broke was a jr650m. the stock traxxas and jr combo wasnt that great anyways. the traxxas wont turn under and pressure.
by the way i am stretched to 16" and running spools.
thanks

JR makes a clone of their 650 in their JR Sport line, called the ST125MG. It's got metal gears and 142 oz torque at 6V. $33.95 with a 3-year warranty. Your Z650 is probably covered by the warranty, too, if you can dig up the receipt.

I have killed a couple ST125's on my Kyosho Turd Crawler by not using a servo saver. The first one was replaced at no charge. The second one, I'm having second thoughts about sending back. It's obvious that I'm abusing the things (they only lasted a couple minutes) and I don't want to be That Customer. Put a servo saver on and haven't had any problems burning up servos, but you won't turn the wheels in every situation.

For huge torque, look into a 1/4-scale servo. As the name implies, they're huge, and not all that spendy, but there are more powerful servos in a standard size case. You'll spend more money, though.

With servos, you generally get what you pay for, and pay for what you get. How heavy is your rig?

rig is kinda heavy,
and i dont think you can get a replacement from them for the abuse it took.
i broke the gears clear out of it.
i will look into the 1/4 servos.
my lhs just has outlandish prices.

645MG is Hitec's metal-gear servo. I've heard lots of horror stories about those not centering properly. Anyone had that problem?

645mg's are great for low budget 2.2's and maybe a Super, but they do not come close to a quality High torque digital servo. I can't stand the term, you get what you pay for, but so far that's how it has been for me with servos.

I think one of the most important components for crawlers and r/c in general are the electronics used in the vehicle. So I say get the highest amount of torque you can afford. There are quite a number of guys from SERCRC that run 1/4 scale servos and do really well with them.

This is really true. I finally invested in a Hitec 5955 for my maxx crawler and man does that thing move those tires.

A couple guys thought my tires were loose with how easily it moves them. Now I just need to put my moabs on that rig and I'll be set.
