Default Novak Havok 3s fried..How to test Novak 8.5t motor

Ok so the esc puffed into a ball of smoke. I want to test the Novak 8.5 t motor before replacing the esc because if the motor is bad too im not going to stick with the same setup. Can I hook the motor to my DC power supply just to see if it still runs? The power supply is 12 v and 5a max. or can i jump the motor directly off a 3s battery. the motor is rated for 3s batteries.

You can't just run it off a battery or power supply. You need to have some kind of brushless controller to run it.

+1 I believe.

My understanding is that the brushless motors are actually a 3-phase motor. Single phase (AC or DC volts....like a battery) WON'T work in this case.

I would like to hear from others to see if I am incorrect though.

Nope you can't jump it off anything.

Dezrik is right, you will need to use a brushless controller or BL motor test meter to try it.

Charlie III is on the money as well, brushless motor's are 3 phase. They need for those 3 phases to be powered in the correct order (and very rabidly) for them to work.

Thumbs up

You should test all leads in all combinations with a multimeter to see if you have Very close to the same ohm values in each phase before I hooked to anything if it got hot and shorted there should be a Lower ohm value that the other wraps
Wire a - b then a- c then b-c
Pos and neg doesn't matter when you are measuring resistance

If the motor is "fried", you'll feel a gummy sensation when you turn it over by hand, instead of the normal magnetic "notches".

You can open up the motor and inspect the windings as well.

YOu won't be able to test the Sensors in the motor, or the sensor harness for damage with out another ESC though. TO see if the motor simply runs.
