Default resistor question

I've noticed the past few times that I've used an on-line LED calculator, the schematics show the resistor on the cathode (negative) side. I was taught (many moons ago) that the resistor goes on the anode (positive) side. All of this is in consideration of using the LED in a 'forward' voltage arrangement.

Have things changed and I'm doing it wrong? I haven't had any issues with the super bright LEDs that I use, so I'm just curious about this.

Doesnt matter what side you put it on, in a series circuit the current is the same across the entire circuit so its not like if you put it behind the LED then the LED would somehow get more juice.

x2, and another thing, unlike LED's resistors have no polarity, so it doesn't matter which direction its put in...i just have to laugh a little when its said the gold band needs to be facing the LED or something like that.
