Default Burning up Motors (not in a crawler)

I know its not strictly crawler related, but there is a lot of talent here, and I was hoping some one could help me out.

I'm burning up motors in my back yard basher. Its a blackfoot. I'm running 7 cells, and an old Novak Rooster. I was running a 21Td motor on a 8 tooth pinion. I also ran a 35T crawler motor on a 10 tooth pinion. Both were done in a matter of minutes.

The 21Td had its timing set to zero. The 35T is not adjustable.

There is no binding in the drive train. Both motors had factory springs and brushes. I was running mainly on the pavement. The tires are a smaller then the stock tires by about 1/2 inch diameter. I dont know what my final drive ratio is but, I dont think I'm over gearing it with an 8 or a 10 tooth pinion. The rest of the gear box tooth wise is standard. I do have a thorpe diff in it.

Any ideas? Could it be the ESC? I have no idea how it could be, but its the only thing I can think of.

Burning up motors is usually:

1-Over gearing
2-Drivetrain binding
3-Over gearing
4-Reduced motor airflow
5-Over gearing
6-Crap in the motor (since you used different motors, I left this for last)

So, you now have somewhere to start.

A bad ESC usually means, the rig won't go.

I understand that over gearing could cause and issue, but the blackfoot shipped with a 21T motor, and a 10T pinion. On top of that the tires are smaller, so if anything its under geared compared to stock.

I guess I could go to a 6 tooth pinion, but thats pretty small, and slow.
