Help choosing motor/esc for build
 

First I want to say I'm new to alot of this, so if this needs to be under a different section...... I dunno.

I'm currently building a 2.2 tube chassis Jeep. I've got a summit 2 speed trans for it. I'm gonna be running Axial axles, 2.2 wheels with rc4wd super swampers. I'm not all too familiar with all the newer brushless/brushed systems out there for crawlers. What would be a good setup to go with? I'm gonna be running a 3s-4s lipo in it and the overall weight will probably be 9+ lbs...

Lets hear some suggestions on what I should run if you don't care to help me out.

Do you want to go fast or slow?
4s is more then most esc's can handle.

Both, mostly be a good crawler but have the speed in 2nd gear when I need it. My scx10 has a cheap brushless ezrun 35T and its too slow for what it is. It was on there when I got it.

it was slow with the 2 speed transmission?

I'm running a Traxxas VXL system in mine.
It's great for high end spped in 2nd but might be to fast for you in first.
I can live with it personally... but it would be nice to have a little more control in low gear.

Check out Holmes Hobbies for quality brushed motors and he offers a waterproof brushed esc that handles up to 6s. If I ever go to brushed that's what I'll run... and maybe one ofhis puller motors.

but again, I do not own this combo and have never seen it live. But the Bender video is very impressive imho.

The ezrun 35T crawler brushless is in my scx10 with stock axles and trans. I'm building a tube Jeep with the summit 2 speed.

Like you said, I'd like to have good control in low gear for comps. My buddy just got a BR-XL waterproof esc a couple weeks ago and it does really great. He's gotta get a better motor for his SCX10.

In my mind I had narrowed it down to the Holmes for brushed power or the Mamba Max Pro for brushless. I was just wanting to see what others would say about it.

those are 2 good choices. I believe the MMP runs both brushed and brushless... that's really the only benefit I see. They both go up to 6s so...

What was the Bender video you were referring to? Was it the video on the bottom of the Holmes motor page?

why not a goat 3s and 18.5 ?? bomb setup

i wouldnt suggest the goat setup because of the 3s limit if you want 4s and they are kind of hit and miss anymore since more and more people are having issues with them. i would get the mmp for the esc and for a brushed motor either a hh 10t puller (if u can find one) or one of his 35t for 3s or 4s just on 4s you will eat brushes faster and need the comm lathed more often. or a tekin 17.5t brushless motor since it will handle the 3s or 4s and have good torque and speed

Well I've been looking around and I've decided I want something that has really good crawl speed and braking for competitions. I also want it to have good punch when I need to get up and go.

How well do the holmes cobalt puller hold up with water and so on?

I know a lot of guys that compete run them so I'd imagine fine.
But about the comp factor.
Are you talking KOH style comps or scale comps?
I don't know that the Summit transmission is the best choice for a scale comp truck. It's really heavy and has a lot of slop in it.

I may run it in scale comps but more than likely it will be a KOH style, but there aren't really any that style around here. I guess it will mainly be a rig I take with me to mess around with after comps.

The Pullers take water like a champ, but like any motor they need cleaning directly after to prevent rusting up. I would suggest that tape or heat shrink is put over the vent holes to prevent debris ingress.

So would your colbalt puller and the BR-XL be perfect for a 10lb rig doing some low end crawling and 2 speed running? What turn motor would you suggest? I'm gonna be using 11.1V 3S batteries somewhere within 1500-2500 mah...

It would be a great combo for sure. I would recommend either the 14t or the 10t, depending on how much stink you wanted. The 10t will be pushing your rig hard. The 14t will run cool and not be so snappy, but you could always go up to 6s if you wanted big power.
