Default Balancing problem

I just got a new Hyperion CX G3 Lipo. 2S 25C 1300mah.

As received it powered my crawler. I just ran it a minute or so. Then went to charge it. Hmmm, the balancing plug is weird. It's a 5-hole plug, although only three holes have pins. So right number of pins and wires, but oversize connector.

Plugged it into my balancing charger (Thunder AC6 clone), determined the battery voltage was 7.65V but the cells were about 1/2 volt different. After just a couple seconds the charger shut down with a connection error message. I tried just the balancing function, but got the same result.

Maybe it's objecting to the "wrong" balance connector, but I don't think so. I think the cells are too far unbalanced. I don't have any other way to get them balanced. I'm currently charging the battery at 1A with the balance connector not connected. It will do that with no complaints.

When the first cell hits 4.2V, will the other start to catch up? Or what do you recommend?

I would make sure you have the black balancing wire lined up to the correct pin. If you are running DC to charge with most chargers have a minimum voltage input. If you can find someone with a blinky balancer they will let you borrow it should get the cells back into balance.

Update: I believe I was mistaken. Using straight pins and a VOM I just verified the two cells are perfectly matched. So the error must be the weird 5-pin connector when it expected a 3-pin.

Note the pins are not consecutive in the plug body. They're in holes 1,2 & 5. I doubt I can withdraw the pins from the body without damaging them. That usually requires a special tool.

The good news is since the battery seems to be balanced I can just stupid-charge it to 8.4V as use it. For a while.

I suppose the solution is to find a proper connector and rewire the battery. Or bitch out Hyperion as to what's going on??? Why isn't there a normal 3-pin balancing connector on this battery?

I do believe that should work just fine though. pin 1 will be ground the other two will be positive as long as the ground is connected to the correct pin on the balancer it should function.

Okay maybe the problem is the Hyperion battery is set up to be charged only with a Hyperion charger and they do things differently -- including the 5-pin connector. There appear to be adapter pigtails to fix my situation.

Thanks for the list.

I emailed RCDude where I got the battery and he replied TONITE. Wow. He has adapter boards and adapter pigtails for my batteries. I just didn't know to order them when I ordered the batteries.
