Question Difference between AE-2 and Sidewinder?

I am debating between a RTR Honcho (with 2.4 radio and ae-2 esc), or building the kit and throwing my Sidewinder in it..Castle told me the AE-2 is "sidewinder-based", but I can't find any specs on it...

I guess my biggest questions are:
  • Can I program it via Castle Link?
  • Does it have a voltage cut-off?
  • Can it handle 3S lipo?
Thanx in advance..

It is for brushed motors only (Note only two motor wires).

For the price they're charging I would just get the Sidewinder.

From what I understand it really has VERY little in common with the Sidewinder other than the case.

It is compatable with the Castle Link which is pretty cool.. You can change the reverse options as well as lipo cutoff and brake power, drag brake %, and radio broadband.

Although official information has been published stating it's 7.2v nimh and 7.4v Lipo only the lipo cutoff progamming includes 9v which is 3s so who knows...

From time to time RPP Hobby has been parting out RTR Honchos and they've had these ESC's for $45 which is a smoking deal for an instant reverse/drage brake/lipo cutoff speed controller IMO. I bought one for my wifes scx-10 haven't run it much yet though.

Yeah, I will only be running brushed, but I use 3S lipos...And the RTR with above elecs is only $25 more than the kit...I will have to call Castle again to be sure...

Thanx for the input y'all..

You can run 3s but need to use an external BEC.

I have been running 4s on the ae2,when it arms,it gives me 4 beep confirmation for 4s....not sure if the cutoff is set or not as I have always shut it down before the battery was depleated.BEC is uesd, esc doesnt get overly warm....so far ,so good.

How is the low end throttle cntrol on the ae-2? I have a rooster crawler esc with some 45t motors (tekins IIRC) and the low end control is not what I would like it to be. Just curious if the AE-2 has good low speed resolution. Thanks!

AE2 is good for what it is. Castle is good also, better than the AE2 and some can run 3s. I tried 3s on my AE2 with BEC and burned it up. Lipo cutoff is there and can be set via the Castle link.

Now I only run Homes Hobbies BRXL's. No BEC needed and you can run up to 6s on them. You can use the Castle Link to change settings on these. I would say customer support is 2nd to none for electronics tho I have never needed it and John is on these forums to lend help, he's one of the vendors.
