Hello guys, I know this topic has years, but I use one of this BECs in my boat, and as I'm coating the receiver with MG-422B silicone, I want to know if anyone ever removed the factory blue heatshrink, if it's safe to remove it, and if I can't coat any part of it. I think it's a cleaner way of doing the work removing the blue heatshrink and use this silicone coating instead of using normal silicon on both holes, and or using balloons, but I need to know it's safe to remove it, I know that I will void the warranty, but as this is for work in close with water, sooner or later water will come in, so I think the risk might be worth it. Hope anyone can help. Thanks in advance! |

i removed the heatshrink off mine and gave it several coats of mg's sillicon coating, no problems at all. only thing to take into concern is that technically ( i assume ) it will void any warranty should the bec die and you want to consider sending it in for repair if thats an option for the bec with castle. from observation when i did mine it did already look like the pcb and components already had a coating on them but putting some more on helps, no issues using mine in snow and winter slush once it was done, the same for my mmp when i did that too. tony |

Home waterproofing will void the warranty, but if it goes wrong or you don't have one yet, we do sell a newer version that is more powerful, waterproof, and has an aluminum case.

Thanks guys for helping and so fast, earlier today morning I removed the heatshrink and applied the first coating on the top PCB ( both sides ) of the photo. Should I also do the coating in the bottom PCB of the photo? ![]() Thanks. Last edited by Morcegolas; 05-04-2017 at 06:41 AM. |

For those using conformal coating, are you using silicone or urethane?

Yep, if their are components on there cover them too. The tinned board attached to the inductor and capacitor is I assume to help with some thermal dissipation as I noticed mine was held on with some double sided sticky pad, presumably again a thermal bandage/tape so it does need some gentle coaxing to get loose but just make sure to give everything a good few coats with some drying time in between and it will turn out great. I'm curious what those three holes are for just about midpoint on the PCB. I'm just going to squirt some ShoeGoo in each end of mine, have it double-sided taped in and don't feel like removing. Not looking for 100% waterproof, just 100% peace of mind about minor water incursions. |
