I've never tried running a rooster on 3s. But i've heard you have to get a BEC.

WTF is a BEC gona help out in this situation? really?

The rooster is already running a 6V BEC, Your best bet is to play it safe and stick with 2s or get a ESC that handles 3S from the begining!

ALSO what type of gearing are you running? you may be over geared.....

because your adding more voltage to the motor its going to get hotter quicker, you would have to gear way down if running a 3s

your motor was smoking? or do you mean your ESC was. An external BEC wont have a dramatic fix for this. I burned up a super rooster. I ran 2s for years on it. Soon as I popped in a 3s it didnt take long for the ESC to smoke and fizzle out on me.

Almost bought the M2 but so many people have issues that I bought a Holmes Hobbies BR-XL instead.

So either stick with 2s or get a better ESC.

the ESC was fine the motor was smoking probably wrong gearing the rooster has a built in BEC so adding one wouldn't be any better I guess I'll play with the gearing

How bad was the smoke?
If it was bad, you may have burned winding insulation off which is really bad. You may have also cooked the magnets so they may be weak now.
If the motor runs now, be aware it may not last a lot longer.

Ive got a rooster running a 35T JP on 3s, been like that for 2+ years.
It doesnt like 2s anymore, it just cogs bad.

A BEC will help the ESC to run cooler.
