LRP crawler 21.5T or holmes crawlmaster?

I am building a scaler right now & I was originally going to use an LRP 21.5T brushless crawler motor (mainly because I have a new Tekin RS with hotwire looking for a new home).
I have been having 2nd thoughts because I do not see many people using this motor in crawler/scaler setups & now I have the chance to get a Holmes Crawlmaster (850 kv) motor for a really good price (I know that the Tekin ESC will not work with the holmes motor and was planning to trade the Tekin for a MMP esc if I get this motor).

I am planning on running 2s & 3s lipos regardless of the motor option.

I am looking for thoughts and opinions on which motor would be the better option for a heavier scaler setup from people with more rc crawler knowledge than myself.

You could use the RS with the Crawlmaster brushless motor, no problems.

The Crawlmaster brushless won't have as good low speed control as the LRP motor because of the lack of sensors. If you are just bashing around and don't care about competing, it would be great for a scaler since they are really hard to kill. It will have more torque than the LRP as well.

The LRP or any other sensored motor will have better low speed control and probably higher peak power at top speed.

What would you suggest for gearing with the crawlmaster? I am planning on running it on a stock axial tranny with the stock 87T 48p pinion gear.
as said before I am planning on running both 2s & 3s lipos

For now it will be pretty much 100% bashing until I get a good feeling for the rig...I might compete in the future but only time will tell.

Start with the smallest pinion you have to prevent low speed cogging.

I have a 14 or 15T pinion right now as my smallest

Sounds like a good start to me! I suggest 3s lipo.
