As apposed to what you're using now, which would be??? Just make sure the fx-r Lipo cutoff is set correctly (9v)

If you are using the stock batt plate you can run a 5000mah no problem i have a 4000 in mine and will run for a real long time. If you are trying to save some weight then this is a real good compromise between size and run time.

In risk of getting flamed for hearsay, some people have had issues with running 3S on an FXR w/o an external BEC. Just saying.

As with any ESC it is dependent on the draw of all your components...High draw, need for external BEC. Low draw, internal bec will work fine.

For $20 it is worth having one around just incase you need it but I dont think it is necessary if you are running a scaler without a bunch of stuff on it. A stock honcho with something like a 645MG will run fine with most esc's on 3s. Add a more powerful servo and a winch servo and it is a good idea to throw a bec in it.
