Default more speed . . . . new esc or new motor

Helping out a friend that is not a member of this site. He has a problem and he wont take whatever I say. He wants to ask what makes the truck go faster is it the esc or the motor. My thought was it should be the motor. Please correct me if im wrong.

Mostly it's the motor.
If the ESC can't handle a faster motor (brushed or brushless), or, more battery (more cells = more speed, everything else remaining the same) then upgrading the ESC can get more speed by allowing more input voltage and/or a faster motor.

Some ESC's on the market do have a 'boost' or 'cheat' mode, but they come with a very heavy price, and for bashers, won't make enough difference to warrant destroying a perfectly good motor.

He'll get more milage out of a better motor, especially if he puts any effort into gearing it properly.

Thanks. Well his whole idea is to get a sidewinder esc and a velineon motor and try to tune the motor using the sidewinder esc. Since he wants to jump into the "velineon" bandwagon he wants it to go a little faster than the stock sw motor.

Tune as much as you want, it won't go much faster at the top end unless you gear it to go faster or replace it with a faster motor.

Even with the ESCs that have boost, it will only take you to the top end of that motor.

Assuming you want top speed, then use gearing to achieve your goal but monitor the motor temps to stay below 160 to 180 F.

Don't forget about the battery. It's a critical part of the power package. If the battery is crap, the fastest motor on the planet won't be very fast.

if he wants more speed with a sidewinder and brushless use the castle 4600kv motor that can come with the sidewinder as its faster than the the velineon motor as its only 3500kv
