| 4PK and/or 4PL measurements please
Hi guys, I'm looking to change my Tx soon and the 4PK and 4PL are on my short list. Problem is though i only have the use of 1 arm so it's a gamble as to if i can reach the steering wheel with my thumb while being on the throttle with my finger (current driving style shown below). Or if more steering accuracy is needed (like on my touring cars) Rather than order them both just to try them (no one has them in stock locally, and i've yet to find a racer or basher that has either yet) i would be grateful if some could take some measurements please? I'm interested in the distance the throttle is from the steering wheel on both axis, like i've shown below. I'm also interested in hearing from anyone that has played around with the wheel position on the 4pk. I know this Tx comes with a bracket to adjust the position and angle of the wheel, but how difficult would it be if i was to try and make up a custom steering wheel bracket? Any other Tx help and advice much apprenticed Cheers Mark |

This is the 4pl. sorry no experience with the 4pk. hope this is what your looking for. if you need some more/different pics let me know. i just tried to use one hand, it seems like it could be done with some practice, but appears that the distance in my second photo is a bit far. but might be better for your hand. About 5mm About 7.5mm Sent from my uber smart, smart phone.... Last edited by asian195; 11-05-2011 at 09:12 AM. |

Just tried that and the wheel height is great, but i can't seem to get a comfortable position with the wheel being that far out (away from the body). Might be workable though Where are the 3rd channel dig buttons on the 4pl please (if i was to run 2 Esc's)? Cheers Mark | |

All the buttons and switches are assignable on the 4pl,so you can put the dig almost anywhere you would like. I think there is only 1 two pos switch that is not workable for duel esc set ups.

Thanks guys The wheel height looks fine on the 4pl, the only worry i have is the distance the wheel is away from the body. Easiest solution i can think of would be to either modify the stock wheel or slap together a new wheel, which would effectively have a lower offset. asian195 hope you don't mind, but i borrowed your pic as an example. If i was to make a wheel as shown is there anything that would catch like switches, EPA buttons etc? |

if you lower the wheel equal to or less then 1/4" you should be good

Hope this helps. 1cm gap. This switch is on top of the steering column. Here is another angle. Dt2 would probably be your best option for controlling dig. Right next your where your thumb is. Plus there are 2 more on the grip. Sent from my uber smart, smart phone.... |

Fantastic thanks again guys I'll have a look around the house see if i can adapt something to move the wheel closer. I'm think something like a aerosol can lid with a hole in it, mounted to the front or back of the wheel. I'll hang on a bit though in the hope that someone with a 4pk has made a custom steering wheel mount for their Tx, as this is pretty much the ideal. Quick question on the 4pl please. If i was to use 2 Esc's (the real reason for a Tx change) and was to program DT2 as my dig button as advised. Exactly how is the dig activated using that button? What i mean is, is it 1 press locked rear, 1 more press locked front, 1 more press 4wd? If so how about if i want to vary the wheel speed of one motor compared to another? |

The 4PKS is the same measurements as the 4PL (can still take pics if required). So the only advantage of the 4PKS is the switch locations around the wheel (I use these for LCC dig) and the drop down wheel. One other advantage of the 4PKS is that you can rotate the wheel in its stock location so if you wish to use the trim controls for other functions you can. The axis of the drop down adapter on the 4PK is about 1.5" (38mm) and moves the wheel a further 0.25" (6mm) away from the throttle lever. One of the biggest advantages that the 4PK has over the 4PL is the ability to add a neck strap. I know this seems like something small but when your out climbing on the rocks, dropping your radio can be expensive. Why dont you use a stick radio like the Futaba 6J (not the 6EX) for crawling. I have been working with this radio lately and it can easily be set up for one hand control with dig on a switch above your hand which is accessible with one of your free fingers. This radio is programable for both electronic dig (MOA) or mechanical dig (LCC), you can dial in/out dig bias (on a MOA) on the fly with one of the other sticks if desired and the radio doesnt need any software or electrical mods to do it. To be honest I havent played with a stick radio this much since the 80's and I'm really liking the simplicity of the radio, now hanging out for the Futaba 8J. |

To answer your question about dig switching, the dt2 is a 3 position switch. Front-4wd-rear. So, press up-front dig, down one click-4wd, down one more click-rear dig, up once-back to 4wd, and so on. Can also reverse the switch, so up is rear, center 4wd, down front. I believe Harley has a programming thread on the 4pl. Sent from my uber smart, smart phone.... |
