Default Need ESC help

New to crawling and cars in general so any help would be appreciated.

Trying to set up a crawler with 4ws and 2 brushed motors, castle sidewinder, 3s battery and Futaba 4pl.

I was able to get the esc to arm, but not as per cc instructions. i couldn't get the esc to recognize the brake or reverse function. I was able to get the crawler moving forward but in reverse, it just jerks intermittently.

Anyone have a similar set up that could advise on what settings your esc and Tx are on?

I cant figure it out.

thx

Check that your ABS is turned off, on your radio.

Default Thx

That was it!

I spent days trying to figure this thing out.

I am an airplane guy so the pistol grip radios are totally foreign to me.

Much appreciated.

After installing new motors on my XR, mine did the same thing. I spent 1/2 a day pissed at the motors, only to find my 3 year old turned on my ABS. So whenever someone says their rig cuts in and out in reverse, ABS is the first thing I think of.

What kind of rig?
Do you comp?
It appears you will need either a 2nd ESC or a "dig unit" of some kind (either a servo dig or an electronics dig).

Glad a previous post at least got you running.

Default esc

Its a superclass crawler.

Hasn't left the house. I am still waiting for some servos for the steering, then it will be ready to go. I'll post a couple of pics later. I just wanted something for my son to fool around with in the back yard or at the flying field. He is still a little young to start flying.

Without a 2nd ESC or a "dig unit", whatever you do with the throttle will happen to both ESC's.
Depending on your radio will determine what you need to do.

I run a Futaba 3PM-x 3 channel. I used to run a servo dig so I could seperate what the front & rear ESC's did, now I run a WantAmix so I can do front or rear dig as well as front/rear proportional.

OK - do I need a "dig" for just running in the back yard? Can you explain what its for?

thx

You can even comp without dig, but doing very tight turns is next to impossible.
Dig "locks" one motor or the other, as needed, so you can drag an end around for tight turns. There are also other tricks you can do as well.
Running dual ESC's can do the same thing is you have a radio that can control them independently.

So, for "fun in the backyard", what you have is OK but limiting.

Funny, I was looking at the "superclass" pics here and found my crawler.

This is it:

BTW - no dig for now. Just fooling around.

Thx

OK - another problem.

I picked up some Hitec 7950 servos and plugged one in. When i turn the wheel slowly, the servo moves OK but not entirely what i am used to. if i turn the wheel fast, the servo seems to be way behind and if i let go of the wheel from full turn, the servo takes 1/2 second, then quickly follows. i dont think i have any expo on or anything else which may effect movement.

any ideas?

thx

Is this connected to the steering? If so, is the linkage or knuckles stiff?
Are you running an external BEC? If so, what voltage is it set to?
What battery are you using (2S, 3S)?

A Super with a single Sidewinder on 3S will not supply enough current for the power hungry 7950.

Get a CC BEC or two if you plan on running 4WS.

can i run 7950 on 3s without a bec?

i am thinking that is the problem - too much voltage.

Hope i didn't ruin the servo.

Run the servo off the ESC or direct off the battery??
If off the ESC, yes, but you will likely "brownout" the RX when the servo is loaded.
If off the 3S battery direct, eh, it "will" work. The question is for how long.

this is the way its set up:

3s battery and motors connected to the CC Sidewinder
CC Sidewinder connected to the receiver ch.2
Servo connected to the receiver ch.1

I don't believe it's an "over voltage" issue running the servo off the ESC, it's more of a lack of supply power.
You will be better served by using an external BEC direct to the servo.
