Add a switch to BR-XL ESC
 

I have a waterproof HH BR-XL ESC that I want to put it in a scale rig. The only problem is its has no switch, so it is plug-n-play.

As you would imagine it is quite a hassle if you have to remove the body to unplug the battery.

I want to put a switch on the +ve line that go into the receiver. Would this setup be same as other ESC that has switch built-in like CC sidewinder or MMP?

Or I should do it another way. Thanks.

Personally, I like it without the on/off switch. I don't like leaving my battery in my rig if it's not going to be used, no telling if the battery might malfunction and burn your rig to the ground.

You want to do it another way.


Find a location that you can hide a little loop of wire and a plug. Extend the positive or negative ESC power lead to run by this location. Install your choice of female two pin plug in the wire so it breaks it, like how a fuse is installed in a car stereo power wire. With the mating male plug shorted out to complete the circuit, plug it into the female plug to turn on the rig.

Switches tend to suck! To put in one big enough to handle the possible amp draw, it's a big switch.

The idea JRH posted is an excellent way to do it.
1-It's easy
2-It handles the amp draw
3-It's cheap to replace if need be.

You may want to tie it onto the rig, that way when it's unplugged, you don't lose it!!

Oh maybe I did not make it clear enough, I meant to put a switch to the +ve line of connector that goes into the receiver, so when the switch is OFF, there is no power to the radio system. That was my initial idea to conserve power when I am waiting for my turn in Comp.

However, this way when the battery is connected and switch is OFF, the ESC may still arm and consuming electricity. I am not sure if this is same as other ESC (ie CC MMP) when battery is connected and switch is OFF. May be John Holmes can clarify that.

The method John Holmes mentioned is really good "thumbsup", it completely cut off the battery from the truck, but a little switch will be more convinent to switch ON and OFF.

If you are just looking to disable the radio, a switch on the RX wire is fine. The ESC will start beeping bloody murder though, it doesn't like being cut off from the world connection. The radio doesn't pull much juice, although the servo does. Suddenly cutting power to the radio can cause glitches too.

If you feel ballsy you can hack into my controller and put a switch for the brain board. There is just a jumper in there now, you would need to remove the jumper and add a switch. It doesn't totally cut power from the system, but it would turn off the radio and the ESC brains so it doesn't beep at you.

Can I still do the switch mod even if mime is water proof version?

You won't be able to hack into it without possibly ruining it. Sounds like you will have to do the inline power plug unless you like to hear angry beeping.

I like the inline power plug. You could probably find a way to hard mount the one side and make it easy to pull and replace the shunt it would totally eliminate all power drain and you may even be able to make it into a scale acessory so when it is in it looks like it belongs.

Guido has a power switch to cut battery power and a seperate switch to cut power to the BEC.
The one for the BEC has been reliable.

The one for battery power has been unreliable, I wouldn't recommend it. John's idea is great, I wish I would have thought of that. 8) :ror:
