Default Take me to Radio OLD school pls ESC question Added

I've been lurking around for a while. Now that there is a TLT on the way for my son this xmas, I can get going

I've got some decent radio gear from my old grasshopper I've had since I was young The chassis is broken in 2, I guess 1 to many jumps down a flight of stairs Anyhow, on to radio questions.

Receiver: Futaba FP-R2GS
Servos: Futaba FP-S28

I understand the new radios can interchange servos and such, but what about my older one? The plug on the end of the servo wire is 3 prong male pins, 1 is spaced out a bit. My plugs look different than the "standard" ones. Is the color coding on the wires still the same, or is there an adapter I can pick up?

How about an ESC, can I just pick one, or is there something special I should be concerned with?
Thanks!

It's called a G connector.
Here an adapter to the more common J....

Be warned, unless your transmitter has a gold sticker on it, it is wide band, and not legal to use (not that it's stopped people before).

Good to see you again Tommy

I have 2 of those old Futaba Magnum Jr. radio and still use them, they are great.
To use that style of receiver with newer ESC and servo's all you have to do is get an adapter. I use one on the ESC and one on the steering servo, they werk great. Here is the adapter.

I usually buy it at the Longmont HobbyTown but you could order it too. I know the adaptor is not cheap, but it beats soldering a old stlye connecter to a new ESC.

Old school to me is winning my 6 trophy's from 1/10 offroad electric back in '89,'90.

Old school to you guys is more like driving your rc cars to school in 6ft of snow, uphill, both ways, back in the '50's!

I'd love to support my local hobby shop, but the one up here has a 120% markup on a TLT 8O Maby his accessories are a little more reasonable. I'll check this week.

Most people probably didn't pay alot of attention to it..... shamelessly copied from Radio South:
Quote:
The "gold" sticker program assures that a transmitter meets the 1991 narrow-band requirements for transmitter emissions assigned by the FCC and AMA.
The FCC requirements for "gold" is -55db sidebands at +/- 20Khz. An additional requirement is the frequency accuracy must be within +/- 1.5 Khz from center frequency.
I threw it out there because the OP's radio looks old enough to not have it.

My first was also in '86. With an 6-gear, short arm RC10 and I forget which radio, an XL2P I think. I raced at Ranch Pit Shop in Del Mar.

If you want more on the gold stickers, you'd probably be able to find something on the FCC website, if you got the time.

Not with a 2 channel reciever... Gotta have 3rd channel for the rear stear.

I had about 4 of those radios but can't remember what that knob did. Isn't it throttle trim, the two screwdriver pots on the upper right are end point adj on throttle?

I'm 99% sure the gold sticker thing is airplanes only, or at least I've never seen a gold stickered R/C car radio. Maybe the narrow band changed before cars got very popular.

As far as the old school connectors go, if your at all decent with soldering you can solder your old connector onto the new servo. Use heatshrink tubing. that eliminates the bulk and length of the adaptors. If soldering isn't your thing then get the adaptos!

Yes and yes

It's only a 2ch radio BigRed so no rear steer. :(

Yep, only 2 channel, the others are trim and centering.
It's good enough to get started eigh?

Has anyone worked on these transmitters? I was playing with it on my desk here @ work, and when the steering wheel hits the stop at full right, the servo centers again. I wonder if it's a POT under there, or the old rehastat stuff?

Soldering is no problem, I was just curious about the signals and polarity. It does look like all the escs use the same wire color coding.

OH, here's another question, How do you reverse a servo? Do you just reverse the polarity?

There are two little slide switches on the radio, near the bottom or under the battery cover (I think), those are reversing switches. Ch1 is steering, C2 is throttle. Some of the new stuff has a yellow wire instead of white but the black and red are the same.

Old school ... Back in my day we used to put midgets in pedal cars and yell at them through megaphones which way to turn. I won my first mini midget modifieds in ..... lmfao. Who cares when you won your first trophy (probably still on your shelf collecting dust next to that box of condoms you never got to use) as long as you still get out there and bash today.

Servo recentering at full turn.

Hmm, sounds like the pot in the transmitter is dirty. Might clean up if ya use it a while or you could spray some contact cleaner in it.

Make sure the contact cleaner doesn't attack the radio housing plastic.

Them radios are great. I wish modern radios still had battery meters instead of a LED that blinks to let you know your batteries are already dead.
