ESC/motor and battery questions

I have a scx10 im building up with wraith axles and i am currently running a integy v2. 45T motor with a traxxas waterproof villan XL5 ESC with NIMH batteries ranging from 1800-3000. I dont know much about lipo batteries and how to charge and balance them. trying to stay on a budget. not a competition rig, just a a wheeler when i have free time

1. Brushless or brushed? why?
2. What motor/ESC combos? with both NIMH and lipo setup
3. Lipo or NIMH? why
4. What setup do you guys recomend?
5.chargers/balancers for lipos?
6. can you run lipo with brushed ESC/motor combos

any other info would be greatly appreciated

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

Most brushless systems don't like crawling at low speeds. Even geared way down they tend to cog and jump or even stall under load.

Pretty much any new esc worth a hoot will work fine with lipo. Just be sure you pick one that is rated for at least 3s. Most of Novak's products are not.

Lipo's are better than nickel batteries because they are typically smaller, lighter, and more powerful. Don't feel you need to buy a super expensive one. Price does not always reflect quality. I've been beating on a pair of $25 5000mah lipos for almost a year now without any issue whatsoever. You also don't have to get them in a hard case. Shrink wrapped cells are fine.

I've got an older Onyx and its been a workhorse.

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

one other thing about brushless, if you do decide to go that route, make SURE it's sensored! sensorless brushless you get into the cogging and jumping/stalling that duuude is talking about. with sensored it's pretty dang smooth. i have a Mamba Max Pro with a 18.5t sensored brushless novak ballistic crawler motor. very smooth and tons of torque.

if water or mudding is in your future stay with brushed motors!! and cheap ones at that.

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

What brushed esc that handle 3s do you guys recommend? And what motor. Cuz my motor is starting to get tired. And as for the lipid batteries what are decent brand batteries? If you guys can post web links for brushed esc, motors, lipid batteries and chargers that would be great. How is that charger that I posted?

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

that charger is good. as for esc's, mamba max pro, tekin fxr, holmes hobbies brxl. that would be my choices not necessarily in that order. as for motors, that's a toss up. integy for cheap motors, then maybe tekins, holmes hobbies for more expensive but alot better quality. if you go 3s lipo you will need a BEC for the servo. as for batteries i've had great luck with sky lipos and gens ace lipos. you can get them at hobbypartz.com

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

Ok. I will check out those products. What's the difference between 2s and 3s? And I don't really kno what a because is and how they work? Im fairly new to the electric side or rc cars. Usually running the 1/8th buggies

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

2s is 7.4volts, 3s is 11.1volts. it refers to how many cells in the battery. do a search here for BEC. it's a battery eliminator circut. in a nutshell your esc has one built in but they are usually small. they usually only allow 5 volts and about 3 amps to go to the servo. most high torque servos require more volts AND amps to run right. the BEC wires in to the battery and supplies the servo with power. a castle creations BEC is rated at 10 amps.

be prepaired for sticker shock! a good esc will run $100, and a good motor usually over $50. BEC in at $25.

look at places like RPPHOBBY.com, and tcscrawlers.com, towerhobbies.com.

if your new, a good tekin fxr/35t motor combo would be nice and around $150 or less. you will have to add a BEC if you want to run 3s batteries tho!

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

brushed motor is good for water and mud if u waterproff your esc. sensorless brushless is ok but you will have the low speed issues when crawling if ur not going to go in water then sensored brushless is awsome

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

i use the goat novak 3cell esc but only on 2 cell the internal bec works 2 7950 hitec servos with no problem for front and rear steer on a wraith alot of people dont like novak but ive never had a problem unless my own stupidity

Good ESC, OK motor, not sure about the price (I almost always buy used). It's a rebuildable motor, so that's a plus.
It should work OK in your SCX10.

For 146.99 plus shipping you could get the Holmes hobbies torquemaster pro combo. add 10 bucks to that and you get a waterproof esc if you can catch them in stock some where.

I run the HH 35t. Love it.

Re: ESC/motor and battery questions

I know this is a old thread, but how well does the HH combo work with the TF2? I want to cage mine. So I was thinking a brushless setup because it will be heavy. I want to be able to crawl in 1st then and some speed in 2nd. Was thinking the mamba max pro, unsure about the motor because I haven't decided brushed or brushless.

Thanks for any suggestions!!
