Default My Tekin FX-R was literally on fire, twice! Please help.

I just got my first R/C more specifically, a Axial SCX10 dingo build kit. I had just finished the chassis and had the wiring and lexan body to finish.

So I soldered my ESC more specifically a Tekin FX-R, Tekin 35T heavy duty, and Onyx 5000 7.4V together (Yes it was the correct way ) and I plugged my ESC into the receiver backwards without realizing it, and fiddled with it for a while until I had to bring it into the hobbyshop just for them to tell me I plugged the ESC into the receiver the wrong way *facepalm*. So after I plugged the ESC in the right way my SCX10 drove beautifully for about 5 minutes until I saw flames coming out of the ESC!

So I decided the problem was just the ESC being plugged in wrong way for so long, so I went out and bought another Tekin FX-R, after about a week of my Axial driving wonderfully the same thing happened again ! This time I made some observations and noticed that there was a hole burn't right between the B+ and M- pegs.

I honestly don't want to buy another ESC just for it to burn up again, so I was wondering if you guys know what's going on? Please be patient because this is the first R/C I have built.

Geebeers....2 similar issues on the same day!

I own/run dual FX-R's in my 2.2 Bully MOA, no issues, but they are used items.

Curious to see what happens for both of you since these appear to be new ESC's.

Do you think Tekin just made a bad batch of E.S.C.'s?

were you guys using a Castle, or other, external BEC or were you using the FXR's BEC power for your Receiver/Servo? If using an external BEC the red wire must be pulled from the esc's receiver plug first before powering up. Just throwin' it out there, it's the first thing that came to mind. Keep us posted on what happens.

Diggy,
No, I didn't have my CC BEC connected when I fired it up. That is good to know though. I was just using the FX-R as is.

Charlie,
Yes, it was BRAND NEW, fresh out the box today. Picked it up from the LHS last week. They had to order it for me from the distributor as they didn't have any instock.

Gawd, I've got a headache now... Wife's gonna be P!SSED, house smells like fried electronics. Good thing it was on tile, not the carpet.

Good point Diggy....that usually fries the RX though.

Worth mentioning though.

Between myself (not so much) & my son (quite a bit more.....) my wife is "sorta" used to the smell of "magic smoke".....

Either way, yes, it sucks.

Maybe find one of the Tekin guys & PM them a link to both threads.....

Indiana,
I sure did. I verified that the shaded portion of the cap was the negative side, and that I had that on the negative post on the ESC before I put power to it. Still baffled.

Its a Battery Eliminator Circuit...The name doesnt make much sense anymore, basically it is so you dont have to run a lower voltage pack to your receiver. It just steps down the voltage from pack voltage to a voltage compatible with radio gear and servos, typically 6.0v.

I would contact Tekin, seems like its a manufacturing issue if there are that many cases of it in such a short time. I can say that I have 2 FXR's and they have been flawless since I got them.

Can someone tell me if I would need a external BEC for a; Onyx 5000 7.4V battery connected to Tekin FX-R ESC connected to a HiTEC HS-5646WP servo motor?

Can someone please tell me I still am really confused...

For most rigs, a BEC is not really needed until you get a bit over 200inoz for your steering servo (assuming a single servo).
If you had a Holmes BR-XL ESC, you can go a bit higher in servo torque before needing an external BEC.

Default Email off to Tekin

As it states, email is off to Tekin already. More details as I get them.

Jeff

lead lobber: Did your ESC fry the first time you hooked it up or a few weeks after? Because I find it strange that mine worked perfectly for a week than randomly started flaming...
