| Lifepo waterproof
I know it would not be a huge jump, but I want to switch from NIMH to Lifepo. I was wondering how these batteries stood up to being submerged. I apologize if someone already asked this but nothin turned up in search. |

Do you mean Lipo or LiFe batteries? I guess it doesn't matter too much, most packs aren't waterproof out of the box. Maxamps has a variety of waterproof packs but they are a little on the spendy side. Check the stickies and search around on youtube, I know there are several videos on waterproofing batteries using plastidip or liquid tape.

Sorry about the confusion I mean LiFe. I agree Max Amps are way pricey. I will take a further look around. My venom NiMH has no issues in the water...kinda hoping LiFe batteries were similar. Thanks for the reply.

What happens to a LI Po in water. Can it explode or catch on fire ?? Or does it short out next time You put it on a charger? I don't want to find out the hard way .

generally electricity and water don't mix, you could easily short out your cells and render your battery useless.

Everything I have read says to keep LiPo away from water unless it is waterproof.

Unfortunately, cheapo life and lipo batteries will not be water proof. what one man calls "pricey" another calls "high quality with peace of mind." you get what you pay for. id go lipo. |

To be honest I have two venom 1300mah lipos that all I did was wrap real good in electrical tape around the whole battery and maybe an inch up the wires to hold them together then a dab of plasti-dip on the back side of the dean connectors and a little where the wires are taped and absolutely no problem. Submerged both while running too.

Dang! ^^ Beat me to it. I have used the same trick, but with duct tape. You could also use a rubber band to bag up the balance plug. There is a tape called "Rescue Tape" that is amazing. I have used it on my boats to wrap up the entire battery connector and balance plug. I have also used it to seal boxes and wrap up wires.

I'd like to quote Chris The Battery Man - "You do not need to waterproof any lipo pack. Run it wet and make sure it dries out afterward. Waterproofing is not a good idea because the cells needs to breath." Every since he told me this at the West Coast Championships, I have ran all packs unprotected, and fully submerged, with zero issues. Packs are in perfect condition. |
