Default battery is expanding...

i bought a lipo about a month ago, took all the normal lipo precautions, used it on my scx10 with novak rooster esc. ive got MAYBE 5 hours usage time on it, i think its been fully charged maybe 3 times, and the battery has started to expand. it was not a cheap battery so needless to say im pissed off, its in a hard plastic case so i think if it expands anymore its going to explode. so i have stopped using it and have come here to ask someone to see if they have an answer to this, ive got some pictures aswell:

it can still catch on fire if it is not connected to anything?

The answer is get it out of your house and into a bucket of sand and don't use it

...cut the leads off first, they'll be useful...but the pack is toast

Sometimes leaving it unused for extended periods of time fully charged will cause a pack to puff but usually it's when the battery gets drained below its cutoff voltage.

Even when you have the LVC set properly it is still possible to pull the cell voltage down if you have a weak cell or demand a high amount of power such as when in a bind. This is where an LVC may noy catch the drop in time.

For this reason I firmly believe in using inexpensive packs, they seem to work as well as packs costing many times more.

5 hours of runtime, 3 charges - I'd say you overdischarged it.

personally, i'd be getting the lipo disposal bucket out and mixing the salt water now, its not worth it to give it a chance to go. look up proper lipo disposal.

likely over discharged, get rid of it. from the looks of it, is it a venom pack? if so they dont have very good batteries for the price (they are hit or miss with all their batteries), you would be better off with a lipo from hobbypartz or hobbyking

Yikes yes that thing is toast! I would be afraid of it!! What is your lipo cut-off set at? They should not go below 3V/cell. I am using Duratrax Onyx hard case 5000mah 2S 25C lipos. So far I am loving them in my Kyosho Blizzard but soon will use them in my new Wraith kit.

What he said. I puffed a hard case pack a few months ago. Before I had a chance to finish mixing the salt water, it blew on the concrete floor in my shop.

my Gens Ace 5000mah 2s 40c hard cases have started to expand a little too, and I've only put maybe 10 cycles on the two of them... have only been charging them at 1c (my charger maxes out at a 5 amp charge), and they've never been below 3.2v per cell

now mine aren't expanding THAT bad yet, but it still has me concerned. mine could be from not being used for a week at a time sometimes... I really need to get in the habit of giving them a storage charge and then just charging them fully the day before I plan to run the truck

my softcase Venoms on the other hand have been used and abused for quite some time now, not the slightest HINT of expanding, so I'm not quite sure how to explain that...

The Rooster ESC does NOT have built in LiPo cut off. Are you using an external cutoff modual?
If not , most likely the pack was overdischarged as others have mentioned.

I'm pretty sure the rooster crawler had a lipo cut off, the one I had, had one.

i said maybe 5 hours, i did not setup a stop watch to give you an exact time, if i had to think really hard about it id say 1 hour to 1.5 hours on full charge

yes the rooster does have lipo cutoff, that is the sole reason i purchased it, there are 2 profiles, and yes at the time it was set to lipo cut off profile

simple fact here is that you have a time-bomb on your hands here, mix up a stiff salt water mix and put the battery in there asap. the fact that its basically new has nothing to do with the fact that you are facing a lipo fire. dispose of it.

Sorry, Your original post just said Rooster. The original Rooster ESCs did not have LVC, but yes, the Rooster crawler ESC does. That's the problem with companies reusing old names on new products, those of us who have been in the hobby for a long time can get them mixed up.
